Mercedes-Benz is undergoing tests prototypes for the redesigned E-Classwith the new midsize sedan and wagon expected to go on sale in 2023 as 2024 models.

AMG’s performance division is also developing its own versions of the new E-Class, and our latest spy shots show a prototype of AMG’s new E 53. Prototypes of the new E 63 should also be on sale.

The E 53 and E 63 should arrive about six months to a year after the regular E-Class.

We know this prototype is for the E 53 thanks to the wheel and tire combo, as well as the big brakes and four round exhaust tips. The final E 63 should also have quad exhaust tips, albeit with a square shape.

There should be a 4-cylinder engine under the hood. Yes, the E 53 was about to lose two cylinders with this redesign, and it was the E 63 is also reported to be downsized from the current V-8 model to just a 4-cyl.

Despite having fewer cylinders, the performance of both E-Class variants should increase thanks to electrification. The current E 53 has a 3.0-liter turbo-6 and a 429-hp mild hybrid. Let’s hope we get something closer to 500 horsepower in the new E 53.

As for the new E 63, it has been reported that it will get a 4-cylinder and a mild hybrid that works in conjunction with a rear-mounted electric motor. This same setting features in the recently discovered 2024 C 63, where it provides up to 671 hp. The current E 63 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 with up to 603 hp.

The new E-Class’ platform is an updated version of Mercedes’ MRA rear-wheel-drive architecture, which debuted in the 2021 S-Class and has since appeared in C-class of 2022. The updated platform benefits from weight savings, primarily due to the increased use of aluminum over steel. This is made possible by advanced joining technologies including aluminum and steel welding.

Stay tuned for updates as they develop.
