We already know that Alfa Romeo is planning to exit a bunch of big electric cars looking to push into the luxury market, but a new report out of the UK sheds more light on one of those models. It’s a new crossover-style sedan that’s set to arrive in the U.S. by 2027 and will compete with the likes of BMW i5Mercedes-Benz EQE and Audi A6 e-tron.

Talking to Auto expressAlfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato revealed that the new electric model will be positioned in the E segment, placing it above Juliawhich will also become an electric sedan for the next generation.

In terms of styling, the model won’t be limited to a traditional three-box sedan body, as Jean-Philippe Imparato hinted: “What about an SUV? What about a sedan? How about something average? Knowing that we’re going to be a BEV, the problem becomes aerodynamics, and knowing that Alfa Romeo’s DNA is a sedan, and knowing that Alfa’s signature is sport, the answer is probably not an SUV – I want to recreate the sporty spirit for the 21st century ” . A similar attitude may be the case with the successor Giulia, as Alfa Romeo bosses constantly talk about how sedan body style is evolving.

Being a bit more specific about the big Alfa, Imparato said it will bring “high levels of performance and spaciousness without destroying aerodynamics.” These comments make us think of the fastback silhouette that has recently become popular among the Stellantis brands thanks to Citroen C5 X and Peugeot 4008 native brother. Some call it a crossover coupe, others a lifted fastback, but common features include slightly increased ground clearance, a low profile compared to bulkier SUVs, and an aerodynamic rear roofline.

The Peugeot 408 combines elements of a low-slung body, crossovers and SUVs. Could Alfa Romeo’s designers come up with a similar offering steeped in Italian DNA? The aforementioned models from Peugeot and Citroen are based on a stretched version of the EMP2 platform, which is an analogue of the STLA Medium. The new Alfa Romeo is expected to be based on the larger STLA Large architecture, giving designers more room for magic. Alfa Romeo may have access to a full-spec version of the platform with powerful twin engines and a large battery, combined with a special Alfa Romeo chassis setup.

The new Alfa Romeo is expected to debut in the US sometime in 2027, with other markets soon after. Imparato admitted that the main focus of the development was on North America, but revealed that they will sell it worldwide.

Leaving aside the Giulia and an as-yet-unnamed large sedan-style model, Alfa Romeo has confirmed that it will launch a range of SUVs. The smaller Brenner will sit below the Tonale and Stelvio, while the larger all-electric SUV will sit at the top of the range, most likely aimed at BMW iX and Audi Q6 e-tron. Finally, there is also a flagship supercar on the horizonrumored to be inspired by the 33 Stradale.
