An updated, streamlined Tesla Model 3 is reportedly on the horizon

Because of this unusual method, the nearly six-year-old Model 3 never underwent a facelift. but now according to a Reuters reportthe updated Model 3, codenamed “Highland,” is on the way and is expected to go into production in the third quarter of next year.

The updated Tesla is part of the company’s attempt to simplify the design and reduce production costs. According to a Reuters report, one of the main design directions for the new Model 3 is to reduce the complexity of the interior while retaining features that interest Tesla customers, such as a center display. Never mind that the Model 3’s interior looks as empty as that first apartment out of college: it has a place to sit, and a big screen, and not much else. Tesla’s last major car update was replacing the Model S steering wheel with a yoke and switching to the horizontal screen orientation that the Model 3 already has.

The other main reason for the upgrade seems to be increased competitive pressure, especially competition in the Chinese market. The Model 3 remains Tesla’s cheapest offering, though its starting price of $48,440 has been steadily rising, and more established automakers have begun putting their weight behind electric vehicles. According to Reuters, the updated Model 3 will begin to be produced at Tesla’s factories in Shanghai, China, and Fremont, California. Car and driver reached out to Tesla for written comment but did not hear back.
