Novelty from Apple MacBook Pro The models, which will theoretically debut with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, won’t go on sale this month, but according to the grapevine, they should arrive before the end of the year.
This comes from one of the most reliable sources on all things Apple, Mark Gurman (and his ever-present Bloomberg (opens in a new tab) bulletin) in which among other things he claims that new iPad Pro there is inevitable (exciting), but the MacBook Pro is not (which is less exciting).
But the good news is that the MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max silicon — which are a beefed-up version of the M2, just like the M1 that came with those variants later — “are on track to launch in the near future.”
Gurman theorizes that the most likely time for these updated laptops to arrive is November because, as the leaker notes, that’s traditionally when new Mac hardware untied. It certainly sounds as if he believes they will be here before the end of the year, at any rate; with all the usual skepticism surrounding rumours. (Though it’s worth remembering that this isn’t the only time we’ve recently heard speculation about those MacBook Pros coming by 2022 will be released).
Gurman notes that the first version of macOS Ventura added support for those 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops.
Also on the Mac front, Gurman claims that Apple is currently working on a new version of the Mac mini that will have Microcircuit M2 inside.
Analysis: minimum changes, minimum fuss…
The main change for these MacBook Pro laptops will be the addition of those more powerful processors, and Gurman notes that other than that, any differences with these devices will be minimal. So don’t expect anything special other than an engine update for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
It will be a low-key launch, according to the leaker, simply because there aren’t any major hardware shifts that would make it worthy of a big flashy event (or even a small, moderately flashy one).
It’s also worth noting that Gurman says he doesn’t expect MacBooks to appear alongside the iPad Pro anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean Apple couldn’t make a surprise move and release them. So you never know, laptops might arrive sooner than expected (or, for that matter, iPad Pro models might arrive later).
As for the Mac mini, the M2 version is fine Gourmand’s previous rumours in which he claimed that Apple was working on the M1 Pro-toting a compact PC (to launch in late 2021 or early 2022), but dropped the idea in favor of using the M2 chip.
A Mac mini with a vanilla M2 was previously thought to be coming, as well as a model with an M2 Pro, which makes sense in terms of placing them next to Mac Studio (the latter is at the upper end). But we’ll see, and Gurman doesn’t mention what chips might be used this time.
