Audi concept cars of the “sphere” family – Grandsphere, Urbansphere and Skysphere – all appear together during a photo shoot at an old locomotive factory near Munich. After the photo session, the cars left for California, heading to Pebble Beach, where they will be exhibited at concours d’elegance events. “Each of these concept cars hides secrets that we will find in the production of the future,” says Imo Redeker, Audi’s head of interior design. We trace the history of these three prototypes, which, according to Mark Lickte, Audi’s head of design, “mark the beginning of a new stylistic course for the brand.”

Audi Grandsphere
The Grandsphere, presented in September 2021 at the Monaco Motor Show, hides the future of mass production: “The footprint on the ground is very similar to the current A8, but the cabin we started from when developing it has been transformed into a flexible and very welcoming space. The idea of ’progressive luxury’, as we say here, foreshadows much of the cars of tomorrow.” As if a fragment of the future was somehow spied on. Of course, under the generous silhouette, similar to a five-door coupe, “but built with volumetric proportions that I personally have never seen”, unfolds a reversal of the functional canons of modern flagships, in which the first row of seats acquires the greatest importance (thanks to the absence of a driver) and can slide back, creating an atmosphere of absolute, luxurious relaxation for autonomous travel.

Audi Urbansphere
The Audi Urbansphere is the largest concept in the “sphere” family, as well as Audi’s largest prototype. At 5.51 meters in length, 2.01 meters in width and 1.78 meters in height, it breaks the stylistic conventions of the segment because, as already mentioned, it is designed from the inside: first by defining the lines and characteristics of the space around the passengers, defining as “ sphere” of their needs, and only secondarily the shape of the body. The wheelbase of an impressive 3.40 meters contributes to spaciousness and is unmatched among competitors. The passenger cabin does not depend on the need to squeeze as many seats, storage compartments and functional elements as possible into a limited volume, but is focused on the need for passengers in an unusually large space.
The doors of the Audi urbansphere concept open like a book. Due to the absence of a central rack, the salon opens immediately in all its spaciousness. Seats that swivel outward and “red carpet light” projected onto the floor make boarding a graceful and comfortable experience. The cabin has four individual seats arranged in two rows. The rear seats are extremely large and have many adjustment options. By reclining the backrests up to 60 degrees, the ideal sleeping position is achieved, which is emphasized by the extension of the footrest. During a conversation, the passenger can easily address the interlocutor by turning the seat. Those who want maximum privacy, on the other hand, can isolate the head area with a screen behind the headrest.

Audi Skysphere
The Skysphere is a convertible GT that anticipates the styling canons that the German manufacturer will adopt for its models of tomorrow. The Skysphere was designed entirely virtually at Audi’s design studio in Malibu under the direction of Gael Buzin, while the physical model was built at the headquarters in Ingolstadt. “New technologies have allowed us to create a unique model between electrification, digitization and autonomous driving,” says Buzin. Depending on the selected driving mode, the Skysphere completely changes its character and physiognomy. “In GT mode, driving is autonomous. The steering wheel disappears from the dashboard and the car is stretched by 250 millimeters, which provides the maximum wheelbase for a completely relaxed journey.’ In this mode, the length of the car is 5.19 meters. In Sport, the Skysphere can be shortened to 4.9 meters, and the steering wheel and pedals return to their original position. “It is a mode designed to achieve maximum driving pleasure also thanks to the system’s total power of 465 kW and torque of 750 Nm.
“The interior was designed around the driver and passengers. In offline mode, the cabin is an open space, the main element of which is a large full-width panel (1415 mm) that displays the car’s multimedia functions. Passengers sit on two large seats and enjoy the journey surrounded by exquisite materials that create a luxurious and modern atmosphere. “With the push of a button in the middle of the center console, the Skysphere can transform from a luxury flagship to a high-performance sports car. We managed to develop two machines in one,” concludes Gael Buzin.
