If you want to know where Bentley — and in turn, to some extent, the entire upper end of the luxury car world — is coming, you could do worse than turning to the brand’s Mulliner division. “Mulliner” is used in several ways in Crewe — it’s used, for example, as a trim level for production cars, and also caters to continuation services that create new versions of old icons — but the sexiest things they do are limited-edition body cars for the very very– the most VIP person.

Batur feels the need for speed

Pop the hood and you’ll see Bentley’s venerable 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine. Unfortunately, this will probably be one of the last times the engine finds use in a new Flying B; it is slated to be discontinued as the brand goes fully electrified (aka all plug-in hybrids and electric cars) in the next couple of years. But at least it goes out with a bang, making more power than any road-going Bentley engine has ever produced: a minimum of 730 horsepower and 734 lb-ft of torque.

…and shares a lot with the Continental GT Speed

Beneath that hot skin (more on that in a second) also hides many of Bentley’s best performance and handling features: an electronic limited-slip differential, torque vectoring, four-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars, and a performance-tuned air suspension setup among them. Batur’s bold styling foreshadows Bentley electric cars

The mechanics may be familiar, but the design certainly isn’t. The Batur’s exterior looks unlike anything else in Bentley’s current portfolio, from the slim headlights to the fastback rear end.

However, it looks a lot like what the Bentley portfolio of tomorrow will look like, according to the brand. Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark He said it himself: “Batur demonstrates the design direction we are taking in the future with the BEV range,” the CEO said in a statement at the vehicle’s launch in Monterey, California. “[Andres] Mindt and his team have reinterpreted the classic Bentley design into a stronger and bolder design that remains both elegant and graceful.”

Inside the boots are made for tailoring

The basic interior layout will look familiar to anyone who’s seen the interior of a Continental GT, but it’s even more customizable – as you’d no doubt expect from a product built by the brand’s bespoke division. However, there is one detail that all Baturs should have: the engraved W12 engine lettering on the passenger side dash.

Resilience within is paramount

Bentley is at the forefront of sustainability in the automotive space, and Batur is taking it even further. Buyers can choose from sustainable interior materials, from Scottish-made low-carbon leather to woven twill, a carbon fiber replacement, to carpets made from recycled yarn.

And if you like gold, you can get it too.

In the carrier car shown in California, the interior’s metal trim is mostly a mix of blacked-out aluminum and satin titanium, but there are also splashes of 3D-printed 18K gold inside, such as the steering wheel and drive selector knob.

The Bentley Mulliner Batur is coming in 2023 and you can’t have it

Suffice it to say, if you’re just now learning about Batur, you’ve probably missed out on buying it, even if you have the right couple of million dollars lying around. Only 18 will be made and all are booked.
