M History
If you are unfamiliar with the history of BMW, in 1972 BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded as the official division in BMW motorsport. The automotive side of the business was the main target for this new subsidiary, and the 1973 CSL was the unit’s first racing car.
However, BMW was involved in motorsport long before BMW Motorsport existed. In the 1920s and 1930s, the company set speed records on land and even won the senior race on the Isle of Man in 1939. It was only 74 years later, in 2014, when Michael Dunlop won another race on the Isle of Man TT – a superbike race aboard the S 1000 RR. Of course, BMW also tried off-road success in the 1980s at the Paris-Dakar Rally. It is this historic racing heritage that BMW is celebrating with the 50-year M 1000 RR package.

M is the most powerful letter in the world
In late 2018, BMW Motorrad introduced special M equipment and Performance M parts for some existing motorcycle models. The M 1000 RR, BMW’s first M-brand motorcycle, debuted in the world in September 2020.
The letter M worldwide is synonymous with racing success as well as high-performance BMW vehicles aimed at customers with high demands on performance, exclusivity and individuality. The BMW M 1000 RR meets all these expectations and continues the racing tradition of the BMW M, being the base motorcycle for the BMW Motorrad World Superbike team since 2021 and also used by many racing teams around the world.
BMW Motorsport GmbH and BMW M GmbH
BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in 1972 with the idea of uniting all BMW sports under one roof and consolidating the design of high-performance racing cars and racing engines. The BMW 3.0 CSL (CSL = Coupe Sport Light) debuted as the first racing car from BMW Motorsport GmbH in 1973. On the occasion of the founding of BMW Motorsport GmbH, Robert A. Lutz, Member of the Board of BMW AG for Sales in 1972, said: “The company is like a human being. When he goes in for sports, he stays fit, enthusiastic, more efficient and powerful. ”
The BMW 3.0 CSL debuted at the 1973 European Travel Championships in three distinctive BMW Motorsport colors: blue, purple and red on a snow-white background. Today, the updated colors of Motorsport are blue – navy blue and red.
This legendary combination of colors could be found on BMW M street cars that appeared in the second half of the 1970s, as well as on successful racing cars. Iconic cars such as the 1978 BMW M1 and the BMW Brabham with which Nelson Pique won the Formula One World Championship in 1983.
From the Isle of Man to Dakar – BMW Motorrad and motorsport
However, success in racing was not the exclusive realm of BMW’s four-wheeled cars. Innovation comes from motorsport, and this was especially true in the first decades. Among the legendary names of those early years were Ernst Jacob Henne, who set at least 76 world speed records on land between 1929 and 1937 on supercharged BMW motorcycles, and Georg “Schorsch” Mayer, who won the 1939 Senior Tourist Trophy on the island. Maine on his 500cc supercharger. BMW.
In 1976, exactly 37 years later, Helmut Dan and Hans Otto Butenut took fifth place
a place in the TT production class on the Isle of Man. They really set the fastest time
their BMW R 90 S, but due to handicap rules they found themselves in fifth place after two
250cc and two 500cc motorcycles. However, given the fastest time, this is the fifth place
celebrated as a victory.
74 years after Mayer’s “Schorsch” success in Senior TT Michael Dunlop was driving his BMW
S 1000 RR to win the race on the Isle of Man TT Superbike 2014. In subsequent years,
RR will leave its unmistakable mark on TT with many wins.
The colors of the BMW M will also be presented in off-road conditions, such as the Paris-Dakar Rally of the early 1980s, which were dominated by factory drivers BMW GS Hubert Ariol and Gastan Racher. Like no other BMW motorcycle, the M 1000 RR 50 Years M carries all this historic motorsport DNA.
