Kyle Bush dominated the 2022 All-Star Race from the pole position until he cut off his right rear tire and slowed down in front of the field.
As he tried to get off the race surface, Ross Chastain, who was fast approaching, ran into the back of a Toyota № 18 and briefly took to the air. Chastain, who got out of control, crashed into Chase Eliot when his car crashed into an outside wall.
All drivers were checked and released from the plot.
“The tire just broke from turn 4, the right rear is lowered,” Bush explained. “Unfortunately for our guys, everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. We had a very fast racing car, a great racing car. Superintendent No. 1 Brandon McReynolds, who was focused on Chastain’s battle for a position with Ryan Blaney, didn’t notice the car slowing down in time.
“I felt that the driver of the 1st car had chosen the wrong lane,” Chastain said. “Our car was heavy all night and we were just coping with the tightness. I saw that Kyle (Bush) had a problem, for example, the tire was sitting, and I guessed the left one when I had to guess correctly. Big punches. Big hit Kyle. Elliot was also withdrawn from the race and was disappointed that he failed to avoid an accident.
“I saw that number 18 (Kyle Bush) had problems, and then I saw that number 1 (Ross Chastain) hit him very hard,” Elliott said. “I just didn’t give him enough space. I knew he was going to go straight; I just didn’t realize he was going to go right so fast. I just misjudged it. I just got confused and didn’t get a break fast enough.
