Continental Tire recalls 68,770 motorcycle tires because they may have cracks that could cause the tread to separate. The recall includes popular ones TKC 80 dual sports tires, ContiGo! tires for light motorcycles, plus K62 and Pound scooter tires. The recall may also include tires that have been installed as standard equipment on certain BMW, KTM and Husqvarna models. The recall affects tires manufactured between 6 January 2019 and 30 April 2022. A full list of tires and the specific sizes concerned applies at the bottom of this article.

According to a recall report released by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem was first spotted in February after a separate recall of ContiScoot scooter tires due to potential cracks in the tread. This initial recall prompted Continental to test the durability of other tires. From February to April tests showed that TKC 80, ContiGo !, K62 and LB tires may be prone to cracking.

Continental TKC 80 tires are standard on some production models, such as the BMW R1250GS.

Cracks in the grooves can cause the tread to tear, which can increase the risk of an accident. Continental says the grooves are superficial and “don’t spread into the reinforced tire material. However, cracks found during strength tests exceeded the maximum limit of 3/16 inches set by federal safety standards. As a result, Continental began recall proceedings on April 29. Continental states that to date it has not received any complaints or reports of damage or injury related to this issue.

Continental replaces all damaged tires sold to customers or in inventory dealers, and reimburses customers who have already replaced tires due to cracks in the grooves. Continental says it has not yet determined the cause of the problem, so the replaced tires may not be exactly the same type, but will be “essentially similar tires that will not be affected by the recall.” The letters to the owners are expected to be sent on June 6. Customers can also contact Continental Support by phone 1-888-799-2168.

There may also be recall measures from BMW, KTM and Husqvarna for motorcycles that come standard with damaged tires. This may include BMW R 1250 GS and GS Adventure, BMW R NineT Urban GS, Husqvarna 701 Enduroand KTM 690 Enduro R among other models.
