Don’t install the new Resident Evil 8 patch if your save file is important to you

If you decided to play Resident Evil Village over the weekend on Steam, chances are you got kicked out of the game and locked out before you could say “Lady Dimitrescu.”

Affected players were suddenly left with a black screen and a message that their data was “incompatible”. If you tried restarting Resident Evil Villageyou’ve been locked to your save file – no scary monsters for you this weekend.

This crashing and corrupting save error can be caused by the fact that you own a certain DLC. Steam user FluffyQuack says Capcom introduced new “anti-tamper code” in latest Village patch message on the forum (opens in a new tab). This is meant to prevent any in-game modding, but it doesn’t seem to work and causes users’ games to crash completely.

Capcom has acknowledged the bug and says an official fix is on the way:

History repeats itself

This isn’t Capcom’s first rodeo with PC crashes. Back in 2007, Capcom’s port of Resident Evil 4 wreaked havoc on unsuspecting PC gamers. Unfortunately, Capcom ported the inferior Playstation 2 build rather than the better Nintendo GameCube build.

The PC version originally shipped without the original lighting, lower quality textures, and lots of bugs. All of this led to unhappy customers and even more unhappy PCs as the bugs caused many of them to crash.

Capcom eventually hired QLOC to develop another PC port, which was later released on Steam as the Ultimate HD Edition in 2014.

What’s the difference?

It’s funny how people don’t seem too annoyed by this disruptive patch. Just one look at Capcom’s Twitter responses to their apology message will tell you what people really want: a Resident Evil Showcase.

The Resident Evil Showcase begins on October 20, 2022 (6:00 PM ET / 3:00 PM PT / 10:00 PM GMT / 9:00 AM Wednesday AEDT)

Showcase features the latest news and update announcements, trailers, and more related to the Resident Evil series. Fans are foaming at the mouth with people asking for more information on the remake of Resident Evil 4. Let’s hope Capcom can iron out all the bugs this time before the PC release.
