But teammate Kalle Rovanper had other ideas, dominating all year while Evans struggled to find his true form and is yet to win a tournament in 2022.

Toyota technical director Tom Fowler simply put the rut Evans found himself in down to pure bad luck and is not concerned about his driver’s speed.

“As we know, Elfyn has had a tough season,” he told DirtFish.

“Probably [he] he was unlucky. I think the most frustrating thing, especially for him, is the fact that he was so fast. In Greece, at the Acropolis Rally, as you know, as a team, we struggled, but Elfyn was our strongest opponent in this rally.

“He took the car even though he didn’t really like it and it wasn’t very well prepared for the event and he said this is the tool we have, I’m going to get the most out of it and it’s been going really well.
