Who buys Mercedes in India? According to the German automaker, every third buyer has deep enough pockets to buy the brand’s most expensive models. These models, all of which cost more ₹1 crore prices, from the AMG, Maybach or top-of-the-line flagship cars from Mercedes-Benz. What is even more intriguing is that Mercedes believes that sales of such models will continue to grow and strengthen its position as India’s top luxury car brand in the near future.
The German automaker said it was seeing accelerated growth in premium car sales, which accounted for about 30 percent of total sales in the first nine months of this year. By September, Mercedes sold 11,469 units, which is already more than 11,242 units. the German automaker may sell in 2021.
Santosh Iyer, vice president, sales and marketing, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “If I look at it internally, we have seen a 68 percent growth in our TEV segment, which is our top luxury segment, compared to the overall an increase of 28 percent. Today, 30 percent of our sales are premium cars ₹1 crore price.” Iyer said the luxury car market used to be dominated by entry-level cars. This has changed recently with what the company calls the “maturity” of the Indian customer. “This also shows the very strong spending power of the luxury customer,” he added. .
Iyer believes that the trend is to maintain demand for his more expensive models ₹1 crore, which could increase from 30 percent at present to more than 40 percent. Mercedes cars in India priced above Rs 1 crore include models like GLE 450, GLE400d, GLSGLS Maybach, S-classMaybach S-class, G-class, AMG E53E63 AMG and such electric cars EQS and the EQS53 AMG. The EQS sedan, which is the first Mercedes EV to be assembled outside of Germany, was recently launched and has already received more than 300 orders.
Iyer said supply issues will determine whether sales of such models pick up in the coming days. He said: “The availability of some of these top-end cars is also a challenge from a supply point of view. We have to wait and see, but clearly the strategy in India and globally is to increase our share of premium cars. We are very focused on being a true luxury brand to push these segments much higher.”
