The CortDAO driver clocked 2×30.762s in his second attempt to top the grid in the aborted session, which was red-flagged at the halfway mark before ending prematurely.

Sirin Racing’s Beitzke Visser finished second, with Click2Drive Bristol Street Motors’ second-placed Alice Powell third.

Two-time champion Jamie Chadwick, who could have sealed her third straight title this weekend, settled for eighth after being hampered by traffic at her third attempt.

It was wet throughout the session and the first attempts on the field were on wet tires with Powell setting the benchmark with a time of 2m31.411s to lead from Garcia and Jessica Hawkins after the opening stints before Chadwick took third for Jenner Racing with 2 m32.972 s.

Belen Garcia then took second before Marta Garcia set her pole time and Chadwick dropped to eighth as others improved.

There was a brief yellow flag in Sector 1 around the 10th minute when Belen Garcia spun between Turns 3 and 4, the tricky conditions causing the Quantfury pilot to lose the rear end on the straight.

Chadwick was unable to improve on her next heat after being stuck behind W Series Academy rider Bianca Bustamante in difficult conditions with very low visibility.

The red flag was thrown in the 17th minute and Visser finished second, just 0.087s behind Garcia.

The session was restarted with 15 minutes to go, but the red flag remained at the end of the pitlane, causing some confusion.

The cars made it back to the end of the pits before having to be pushed back as the light remained red.

Five minutes later, the track turned green as heavy rain continued to fall.

The yellow flag came after Abby Pulling was followed by Racing X team-mate Bruno Tomaselli at Turn 20 before the session was brought to an early end.

Belen Garcia will finish fourth in tomorrow’s race, with Hawkins and Pulling fifth and sixth respectively.

Sarah Moore starts seventh for Scuderia W, with Chadwick, Fabien Wohlvend (CortDAO) and Puma’s Emma Kimilainen rounding out the top 10.
