Google Pixel Fold leak reveals size, display and camera details

We haven’t heard anything official about it Google Pixel Fold at the launch of Art Google Pixel 7, Google Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel watch – but a foldable phone made by Google is coming soon, according to a new leak.

The people over on 91 mobile (opens in a new tab) – who are more often than not accurate with their predictions – managed to get access to several specifications for the complex device, including information about the size and shape of the device, as well as some details of the display and camera.

Screen panels are apparently ordered from Samsung (according to previous rumours), and will run at a resolution of 2208 x 1840. The display is said to offer an average brightness of 800 nits, a peak brightness of 1200 nits, and a refresh rate that can reach 120Hz. At the same time, it is reported that the overall dimensions of the device in the unfolded form are 123 mm x 148 mm.

Technical characteristics of the sensor

Speaking of cameras, the Pixel Fold is said to boast a rear camera consisting of a Sony IMX787 primary (64MP), an IMX386 ultra-wide lens (12.2MP) and an S5K3J1 (10MP) telephoto lens. The display’s internal camera is reported to use a Sony IMX355 (8MP) sensor, while the external display uses a S5K3J1 (10MP) sensor.

Some of these sensor specs have been hinted at before, but as we get closer to the Pixel Fold’s launch, details are starting to emerge from multiple sources – which of course makes it more likely that they’re indeed accurate.

Talking about the launch, the foldable phone is expected to make its debut at some point during 2023 (after initial rumors of 2022). As always, price will be crucial, and it’s expected to be around $1,400 (around £1,255 / AU$2,260).

Analysis: This tricky one comes into focus

At this point, we’ve heard that Google has been working on a foldable phone for a long time (though we haven’t yet). Apple Car territories in terms of longevity). Given the frequency of leaks we’re hearing now, it really does seem like the launch is getting closer.

The signs are promising: with Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung is now on the fourth iteration of its flagship foldable phone, so it knows what it’s doing with displays. Then there’s Google an extension of the Pixel hardware linewhich demonstrates that the company is serious about increasing the number of devices it has to offer.

While foldable phones are hardly mainstream at the moment, they’re slowly becoming more commonplace – and as prices continue to fall as the technology gets cheaper, the trend will only go in one direction. It seems like it’s time for Google to step in and give Pixel fans a premium offering.

Meanwhile, Apple bides its time with its own folding iPhone. It looks like Apple is willing to take its time when it comes to launching a flip phone, perhaps waiting until the technology becomes even cheaper and even more reliable.
