Google Maps has been allowing its users to share their location with friends and family for some time now. It’s a nice security feature that lets people know where you are at a given time—you can share your location temporarily (for a period of time) or permanently—but it’s also a handy tool for sharing your arrivals while you’re traveling.

this week Google has started rolling out an update to Google Maps which will make its location sharing feature even better. Now you can let Google Maps send a notification to a friend or family member to let them know you’ve arrived at a certain location. And that includes coming home.

To do this, you must first share your location with a friend or family member you want to be notified of when they arrive. (If you already share your location with the person you want, that’s fine.)

How to set up location sharing on Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Select your profile icon (top right corner).
  3. Select the Location Sharing tab.
  4. Select the contacts you want to share your location with.
  5. Select “Share”.
    1. Please note that during step 4 (above) you also have the option to choose the amount of time you want to share your location with this contact(s). You can set it to stop sharing at a certain time. If it’s a friend of a family member, we suggest choosing the “Until you turn it off” option, because if something happens, their window to locate you doesn’t end.

(You can stop sharing your location with anyone at any time by following the same steps, but select the contact at the bottom of the screen and select Stop.)

How to get an alert when someone came home

      1. Open Google Maps.
      2. Open Google Maps.
      3. Select your profile icon (top right corner).
      4. Select the Location Sharing tab.
      5. Select the contact you want to receive an arrival notification from.
      6. Select “Add” and select the location where they should arrive.
      7. Select “Save”.
        1. Once you do this, the person you’re requesting arrival information from will receive a notification reminding them that they’re sharing their location, and that you’ll receive another notification when they arrive at your location.

(Note that the person you’re requesting an arrival information from can turn it off once they see the notification. This means that if the person you’re requesting an arrival information from doesn’t want you to know they’ve arrived somewhere , they can stop it.)

Google is now rolling out this update to Google Maps, but the update may not be available to all users yet, so don’t worry if you can’t add arrival notifications. This capability is expected to be available to all users soon.
