Hyundai has announced a recall of some vehicles equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

A problem with the transmission can cause the vehicle to go into safe mode, then reduce power for about 30 seconds and then shut down completely, potentially causing a crash. Drivers may notice warning lights in the instrument cluster in addition to a warning message before the vehicle enters safe mode. Hyundai said it was aware of 229 cases of the problem between June 1 and September 26.

The recall affects a total of 53,142 vehicles in the US and covers the following models:

2021-2022 Santa Fe
2021-2022 Sonata
2021-2022 Velaster N
2022 Santa Cruz
2022 Elantra N
2022 Kona N

Dealers have also been asked to stop selling the affected models until action is taken. The remedy requires dealers to update the transmission control software and in some cases replace the transmission.

The service will be provided free of charge, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 5. Anyone looking for more information can contact Hyundai at 1-855-371-9460 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. (recall company reference number 22V746000).
