There’s a new Elden Ring mod that’s so good I wish it made it to the console version somehow.
Version for computer Elden Ring has some fantastic mods thanks to its large and dedicated community. One of the latest mods in the game, Increased drawing distance (opens in a new tab)does pretty much what it says on the tin (thanks Wccftech (opens in a new tab)). When installed, it will allow you to see more of the game’s distant landscapes while traveling through The Lands Between.
The best thing about the mod is that it does this with very little impact on game performance. If you have a computer that can run Elden Ring properly, then it’s totally worth downloading the mod to get a better view of the game’s distant sights.
Horizons between
So why is increasing draw distance such a big deal for Elden Ring? For starters, developer From Software really wants you to immerse yourself in its environments in all of its games. Whether it’s the distant Awakening Bell in Dark Souls or the distant Lothric Castle in Dark souls 3. You are constantly informed of your destination and the vast amount of travel between you and it.
This is no different in Elden Ring. Right off the jump, you can get a good look at Stormvale Castle, where the game is located the first major boss resides, and the monolithic Erdtree in the very center of the earth. These tall landmarks serve as a reminder of how big the world around you is and how small you are in it.
Increasing the draw distance of the Elden Ring further serves this theme. And while it’s highly unlikely, I’d love to see From Software implement it in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of the game.
Having an even greater sense of place in The Lands Between in relation to other major areas on the map is something I’d like to see on repeat playthroughs. If only to bask in the bleak beauty of the dying world of the Elden Ring. And while the game doesn’t have an official photo mode, the increased draw distance would surely please screenshot enthusiasts like myself and, I’m sure, countless others.
