In the fourth month of 2022, three Japanese automakers, namely Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor and Honda Motor, saw that their monthly sales were declining year on year in the world’s largest car market.
In addition, all three companies reported a drop in total sales on an annualized basis between January and April. Among these three, Nissan sales have declined the most since the beginning of the year compared to last year – by 23.4% of 368,125 cars sold. The other two automakers fell more than 10%.
Under external influences such as the revival of COVID and the limited supply of raw materials, China’s car market experienced a general downturn in April.
According to some data, in the last month Toyota sold 111,100 cars in China, which is 30.7% less than a year ago, according to Kyodo.
Compared to the first three months of the year, April had the lowest monthly sales level for the company. Notably, the Toyota FAW-Toyota joint venture resumed production at its base in Changchun on April 11 after a month-long shutdown due to a pandemic.
Honda sold 95,216 cars in China in April, down 36.3% from a year earlier. In particular, one of its two joint ventures in the country, GAC Honda, sold 42,936 cars, up 33.4% from a year ago. At the same time, Dongfeng Honda’s monthly sales fell 38.4% to 52,280 units.
The total sales of the automaker for the last four months of the year amounted to 449 thousand cars. It is noteworthy that in the first four months of this year, Honda sales increased only in February compared to the same period last year.
Over the past month, Nissan Motor has sold 69,262 vehicles in China, down 46% from the same period last year.
Despite the company’s overall tilt in April, the Nissan Venucia car brand managed to sell 4,455 cars for the month, up 65.9% from last year. By the end of April, the brand’s sales since the beginning of the year increased by 32.7% compared to 2021.
