September 22 – Jury selection begins next month in the trial of a man accused of shooting and killing a Preston man in 2019.
Francis L. Giannelli, 28, of Glastonbury, is accused of killing Robert Thompson, 35, of Preston on Oct. 26, 2019. In July, Giannelli rejected an offer to serve 35 years in prison, opting for a jury trial instead.
Prosecutors say Giannelli was a passenger in a car when he fired six shots from a .380 semi-automatic handgun at a nearby car that was stopped at a stoplight at the intersection of Routes 12 and 2A in Preston.
Giannelli told police he thought Randy Devoe, the driver of the car Thompson was in, was moving like he was reaching for a gun. He claims Thompson was accidentally hit by a bullet. Police said Thompson was hit in the neck.
A Ledyard police officer stopped Devo’s pickup truck on Route 12 minutes after the shooting, police said.
The driver of the car Giannelli allegedly fired from, Michael Soto of Hartford, was later arrested on charges that he had a fully loaded .40 caliber handgun at his Hartford home within reach of the child.
