The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has received the supply of an electric fire truck, the first of its kind in North America.

The truck is manufactured by an Austrian company Rosenbauer and was called RTX. The brand claims that the car is the world’s first electric fire truck.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Christine Crowley made her car debut at the LAFD Historical Museum in Hollywood and touted its capabilities: “It will reduce noise and reduce it to almost nothing in terms of diesel emissions. We will actually create space for our firefighters to be healthier around our fire engines. ”

The RTX is powered by two electric motors, one on each axle to provide all-wheel drive, and it even has a crab mode feature for maneuverability. The engines themselves can provide a 360 kW peak / 250 kW continuously, which is equivalent to 490 liters. pp. / 350 hp Two batteries comes from Volvo on board a total of 132 kW / h, providing up to two hours of operation.

In addition to the electric transmission, the truck has a diesel power reserve extender, which is a BMW 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit with 300 horsepower. The brakes have a diameter of 17 inches and have a regeneration function to recharge the batteries.

Aside from the electric transmission, the car is a fairly standard fire engine and has two 1,000-foot hoses, one 5 inches in diameter and the other 2.5 ”. The water tank can hold 500 to 750 gallons that can be dispensed at 750 or 1500 gallons per minute depending on the desired pump power.

LAFD actually ordered the Rosenbauer RTX in February 2020 and expected deliveries in 2021, but a pandemic prevented it. The cost of electric fire truck starts at $ 900,000, but the city-ordered model raised that figure to $ 1.2 million.
