Nicolas Latifi will leave the Williams F1 team at the end of the 2022 season, which also marks the end of his current contract.
A replacement will be announced at a later date, the team said Friday.
His teammate Alex Albon will continue with the team in 2023 and beyond contract extension in August.
Williams is the team where Latifi made his F1 debut in 2020, although the Canadian youngster has not made much of an impression in subsequent years, scoring just seven points in 55 starts.
This became much more apparent earlier in September Grand Prix of Italy where Williams reserve driver Nick de Vries, filling in for the ill Albon, scored two points in his first race. Latifi still has zero points with most of the season behind him.
A stellar performance means de Vries is now the favorite to replace Latifi, although Williams has other options. The list includes American driver Logan Sargeant, who is part of the Williams driver academy and currently competes in Formula 2. There is also Daniel Ricciardo who leaves McLaren at the end of 2022 and has yet to sign with another team. Ricciardo will be replaced by Oscar Piastre at McLaren.
Alpine is still without a replacement for Fernando Alonso next season to join Aston Martin as a substitute for Sebastian Vettel retires. Meanwhile, Alpha Tauri announced on Thursday that current pilot Yuki Tsunoda will remain with the team through 2023. Pierre Gasly will also continue to represent Alpha Tauri in the new season.
