The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is the company’s first mid-size SUV to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and others.
Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch its new flagship SUV in the Indian market today. From the teaser it became known that the future SUV will be called Grand Vitara. The manufacturer is already accepting pre-bookings at Nexa dealerships for Rs. 11,000. We expect the price of the Grand Vitara to be announced sometime in August. Moreover, the Grand Vitara is expected to replace the S-Cross in the Maruti Suzuki lineup. Here are all the details we know about the new Grand Vitara.
Grand Vitara gets several power units
Grand Vitara will be offered in two power units. There will be a 1.5-liter mild hybrid engine and a 1.5-liter strong hybrid system. The mild hybrid engine will produce 100 horsepower and 135 Nm. It will be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter. You’ll also get petals if you select the automatic gearbox.

In addition, there is a strong hybrid system, which is expected to be offered in higher trims. The combined power of the engine and electric transmission is 115 horsepower. The torque of the engine is 122 Nm, and the electric motor is 141 Nm. However, we cannot simply add up both numbers for the total torque output. This engine will only be mated to an e-CVT automatic transmission.
Grand Vitara will get all-wheel drive
The Grand Vitara mild hybrid powertrain will be offered with an all-wheel drive system. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Grand Vitara are the only midsize SUVs in the segment to offer four-wheel drive.
Maruti Suzuki has released a teaser showing that it will use the AllGrip AWD system. The AllGrip system comes with multiple drive modes. There will be sand, snow and stone. In addition, there is also an automatic mode in which the system automatically detects the terrain and makes the necessary changes.
The Grand Vitara shares the base with the Toyota Hyryder
The Grand Vitara will share many underpinnings with the recently launched Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Therefore, the components, engine, gearbox, specifications and other details will be shared with Hyryder. Moreover, both SUVs are based on the same Suzuki Global C platform, which is also used for the Brezza and S-Cross. Despite a large number of common components, both manufacturers will have slightly different exterior and interior designs.
List of Grand Vitara features
Maruti Suzuki has made some significant improvements in terms of features in its recent products and the Grand Vitara will be no different. This will be Maruti Suzuki’s first car with a panoramic sunroof. There will be ambient lighting, wireless charging, a digital dashboard, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree parking camera, cruise control, a heads-up display and connected car technology. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For safety, there will be up to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and electronic stability control.
