Developing its investment in 2019 in the company Sila for batteries, Mercedes-Benz announced a supply agreement to include silicon anode chemistry first in the battery to offer extended power reserve for the future G-Class, which includes the electric G-Wagon.
Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with cars, especially since the German automaker declares itself the “inventor of the car.” As more and more countries and their drivers move towards electrified options, Mercedes has followed suit. its line of EV equalizersproviding the quality and luxury that the automaker is famous for, but with zero emissions.
This includes the EQS sedan as well its a future version of the SUV, in addition to the more compact EQE sedan, which will appear later this year. That’s not all. Mercedes-Benz shared several concepts pushing the boundaries of EV technology as VISION EQXX.
Last fall at the IAA Mobility exhibition in his hometown Mercedes the automaker presented GQ-Class EQG concept Is an all-electric version of its famous G-Wagon. Very few details were revealed at the time, and most still remain a mystery, as the production version of the G-Wagon electric station wagon remains for several years.
However, after the last announcement together with Sila we can expect more energy-intensive batteries for EV in the Mercedes G-series, thanks to the next generation silicon anode technology.
Sila by the middle of the decade will provide MB electric vehicles, such as the electric G-Wagon
Mercedes-Benz has announced a new supply agreement with Sila press release today, shares an idea of his plans for silicon anode technology. Originally a German automaker invested in Sila back in 2019 as part of its R&D program to study advanced battery technology for future EVs.
Three years later, Mercedes signed an agreement with Sila and officially became the battery of its first publicly announced car customer. Marcus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer and Board Member of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, spoke about the strength of the Force:
Sila has come a long way since founding our strategic partnership in 2019. They have proven their ability not only to provide scientific innovation at the highest level, but also their ability to produce high quality materials. We are pleased that at Sila we have a leading partner to help us power our future generation of luxury electric vehicles with their innovative anode technology. Providing such a high energy density really changes the game and allows us to think in completely new directions when designing future electric vehicles. Our partnership with Sila is another important step towards creating the most coveted luxury electric cars.
Mercedes-Benz explains that under the supply agreement the silicon anode chemistry Sila will be included in the EV battery as a purchase option for the EV G-Class, including the electric G-Wagon. Compared to modern EV battery chemistry, Sila technology allows you to increase the energy density at the cell level by 20-40%, reaching more than 800 W-hours per liter (W · g / L).
Mercedes-Benz believes it can use this chemistry to store more energy in the same amount of space, thus providing more power reserve in future EVs without compromising on size or internal capacity. Co-founder and CEO of Sila Gen Berdichevsky also spoke:
We focus on supplying materials that are cost-effective and able to deliver on the promise of electric vehicles, providing greater power reserve, longer charging time and lower battery costs per kWh. To realize the potential of next-generation materials, expansion is a key part of performance, and from the beginning we have approached the standards and scale of automotive quality. With our new plant in Washington, we guarantee that we will be able to meet the demands of our automakers, such as Mercedes-Benz, as they move into a fully electric future.
The next-generation Sila silicon anodes will be manufactured at a plant in Washington using 100% renewable energy. Both Mercedes and Sila agree to the goal of supplying an electric G-Wagon with a more energy-intensive battery option by the middle of the decade.
