    Nissan introduced the tiny kei electric car for Japan called Sakura, the design of which was received from Concept car IMk from 2019. Named after the Japanese cherry, the Sakura is only 133.7 inches long, which simply fits into the kei-car rules governing the smallest class of cars designed around Japan’s narrow city streets. Unfortunately, Sakura’s small size means the EV will never enter the US market, but we can admire the cute little box from afar.


    The Sakura is powered by a single electric motor that produces 63 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque. The car weighs 2,359 pounds, so don’t expect bright performance – Nissan cites a top speed of just over 80 miles per hour. Nissan says “fast and steady acceleration makes highway mergers easy,” but we’re not sure we’d like to test that on U.S. interstate highways. The 20.0 kW / h battery provides a range of 112 miles according to the Japanese test cycle and can act as a power source, while Nissan claims it can provide power at home during the day.

    Nissan advertises a turning radius of 15.7 feet, and Sakura is equipped with a ProPilot driver assistance system and an automatic parking system. To facilitate navigation on city streets there is a single pedal driving mode, while the cabin has a 9.0-inch infotainment screen and 7.0-inch digital display. Sakura can be in 15 different colors, including four two-tone. Sakura goes on sale in Japan this summer and starts at its current equivalent of just under $ 14,000.
