- Porsche is preparing to show its rally version 911 sports car on Auto show in Los Angeles Next week.
- In honor of the victory of the Porsche team in 1984 in the Paris-Dakar rally, the company calls its all-wheel drive sports car the 911 Dakar.
- In addition to the all-wheel drive system, the 911 Dakar has more ground clearance than the standard 911, as well as softer all-terrain tires.
Ahead of its official production debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next week, Porsche is sharing details about the development of its off-road-ready 911 Dakar sports car. If this canceled 911 service has you asking, “What the Subaru Outback– Love nonsense is this?” we would like to remind you of Porsche’s rich heritage in rally racing, especially the famous Paris-Dakar Rally, which the manufacturer won for the first time in 1984.
Porsche says it went to great lengths to stress test the 911 Dakar model, driving 6,000 miles off-road during the car’s development and 300,000 miles in total in what the manufacturer calls “extreme conditions.” Honestly, judging by the photos here, driving the 911 Dakar on gravel, sand and icy surfaces in remote areas like Morocco, Dubai and Sweden looks like a lot of fun.
We don’t have any details on the 911 Dakar’s powertrain yet, but it’s safe to say that it will use one of the 911’s turbocharged six-cylinder engines and will likely only come with Porsche’s eight-speed PDK automatic transmission. We reported on this recently a pair of prototypes used for development in Chile were changed Carrera 4S models with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six, with a capacity of 443 hp. All-wheel drive will obviously be standard, and we’re curious to know what other off-road improvements have been made to the car beyond the raised suspension and upgraded tires.
If you’re as intrigued as we are, check back at 10pm ET on November 16th when we’ll have full details on the production model.
