Lewis Hamilton shared a clip last week he was roughing it around town in an R34 Nissan GT-R. It’s an instant classic video, a rare example of the most successful F1 driver ever just having fun in a cool car, but not everyone is happy. Chief among the dissatisfied, apparently, is the company that actually owns the car.
This is reported by CarBuzz The car is owned by Japanese company Omoshiro Rent-a-Car, which rented the Nissan to either Hamilton or his partner during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend. The video was taken down shortly after, but Hamilton’s direct statement was a clear violation of company policy. U tweet attributed to the companythe brand simply says “no riding like this”.
While the brand confirmed the Hamilton rental to CarBuzz, a spokesperson for Omoshiro Rent-a-Car added that “Under the guidance of our attorneys, [Omoshiro is] cannot disclose any additional information.” It is unclear if this is an active legal case.
But regardless of what happens next, the conclusion is the same. If you’re going to rent a car to do something the agreement expressly forbids, don’t post the video online unless you’re prepared for the rental company to find it. Even seven-time world champions and 103-time Grand Prix winners are not immune to the rules of rental contracts.
