Honda’s first electric motorcycle is here, and it may not be what you expected – the new 2022 Honda CRF-E2 – it’s a track bike for kids. The CRF-E2 is manufactured and designed by Greenger Powersports, and Honda is helping to set up the final version. The result is described as an official Honda licensed product and we call it the Honda CRF-E2 because we are a motorcycle edition. We captured one of the first E2s available at Greenger and then released our youngest racer-tester on local trails.
- Honda CRF-E2 2022 is a quality motorcycle. The frame is an aluminum design with double side members modeled on adult Honda motocross, disc brakes slow it down, Kenda Millville K771 tires bring electricity to the ground, and the E2 has a cantilever shock absorber without a lever with adjustable bounce and bounce. preload. The motorcycle looks great and the finish meets Honda standards. This is not a cheap toy that you will find in construction and department stores. It is sold exclusively at Honda dealers with a price list of $ 2,950.
- The size of the CRF-E2 is halfway between the Honda CRF50F and the CRF110F. The E2 seat is adjustable in height by 24.8 or 25.5 inches. In the low position, the seat is 3.2 inches higher than the CRF50F, and in the high position – 0.4 inches lower than the CRF110F. Test racer Avery Bart is almost 8 years old, 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 44 pounds, and the E2 fits her perfectly. Speaking of weight, at 106 pounds filled with electrons, the E2 is four pounds lighter than the CRF50F and a staggering 64 pounds lighter than the CRF110F – a huge difference for a young rider.
- Driving a Honda CRF-E2 is incredibly easy. It has an ignition key. Once the key is in the on state, the rider or adult can choose one of two power modes. When the power mode is on, press the power button (redesigned electronic start button), and all the racer has to do is turn the throttle. This is instantly included in the game, as a fully automatic single-speed transmission doesn’t mean clutching or shifting gears. Any teenager of sufficient height who is able to balance on a bicycle will be able to ride an E2.
- There is a significant difference between the two power modes. Phase 1 limits the E2 speed to 10 miles per hour, and Phase 2 raises the rate to 20 miles per hour. The peak power of 3.4 horsepower is not as important as the available torque of 18.4 ft-pounds. Without a doubt, the CRF-E2 does not have enough power.
- The takeoff from the start in stage 1 is not as smooth as one would like. Electric motors on motorcycles can only be used as much as a motor controller. With so much torque, as soon as the electric motor turns, it needs to be reduced to make power available. In Stage 1, we found that the power supply is too abrupt while driving, especially if the rider is trying to get through obstacles that require turning the steering wheel. Once the rider starts running, the throttle response will be correct, and the speed limit of 10 miles per hour will delight nervous parents.
- Put the 2022 Honda CRF-E2 in Phase 2 and it will be a small rocket. A Greenger spokesman we spoke to reminded us that the E2 is a trail bike, not a racing bike. While we respect this, the power delivered in Stage 2 will undoubtedly result in a young hot shoe looking for friends with whom to play dice. It’s funny to watch E2 burst in stage 2, and it’s especially amazing when all you hear is a whine of an electric motor.
- We believe the CRF-E2 controller should be a little more high-tech. Instead of having only two fixed modes, we want to be able to fine-tune the throttle response. Parents should be able to gain throttle response in a wide range as well as maximum power. Ideally this would be done via Bluetooth and a mobile app. While Honda and Gringer are doing this, the adult-controlled switch will be a great safety feature.
- The chassis is perfectly matched to the engine. The suspension worked well for Avery in both modes and we rode on pretty bumpy trails. It’s not ready to air, though Honda’s promo photos show the E2 jumping, so that activity is within its intended use.
- The suspension setting balances the needs of riders who just want to hit, and at the same time provides the taut action needed for Stage 2 kids. When the adults jump up – as they invariably will – the rear suspension almost drops. This tells you that it is designed for children weighing up to 99 pounds. Weighing in at 44 pounds, Avery had no complaints. The shock absorber has a rebound damping adjustment that seems redundant on the children’s trail bike. If your child asks for damping adjustment, it’s time for a racing motorcycle. The suspension travel is just under four inches at each end – a lot, thanks to the settings, and perfect for the engine.
- Kenda Millville K771 tires are a great choice. This intermediate tire worked on different terrains on which we tested – rocky, hard and sandy. 60/100 tires are installed on two 12-inch disks. Honda and Greenger need to upgrade the 14-inch front wheel so the CRF-E2 can better overcome off-road obstacles.
- Avery more confidently challenged the Honda CRF-E2 than the 50cc. The predictable power supply of a moving engine allows riders to learn to focus on acquiring new skills. No need to think about engaging an automatic clutch or shifting gears. The rider prepares for new tasks, such as riding through a rock garden to modest hills without being distracted. E2 is a great learning tool.
- Hydraulic disc brakes are simple and easy to use. Each is controlled by an adjustable lever on an aluminum steering wheel. Avery likes the action of the brakes and we haven’t seen her fight them. Since the E2 has no foot control, the rider’s feet are securely fastened on strong footrests.
- The operating time of the lithium-ion battery Honda CRF-E2 2022 is indicated at two o’clock, and for us it was not a problem. Although Avery did not grind, she tested E2 on difficult terrain. It takes four hours to transfer the battery from discharge to full charge with a standard charger – an additional fast charger takes two hours to charge the battery by 80 percent. If your rider discharges the battery before the personal energy runs out, the battery can be easily replaced. However, you’ll drop $ 1,000 for this second battery – worth it if your racer is inexhaustible.
- No maintenance is required. With no engine oil, air filter and cable controls, the E2 takes care of itself. The chain may require adjustment from time to time, depending on how hard you ride your bike. You definitely don’t have to be a supervisor to own a CRF-E2.
- For a young rider studying mobile two-wheeled ropes, the 2022 Honda CRF-E2 is undeniably appealing. It is a strong performer, backed by a Honda dealer network, incredibly easy to operate, it can be ridden in unconventional places and causes huge smiles on the faces of children. You can’t beat this for less than $ 3,000.
