Review
The 2023 Honda Odyssey will make you forget any negative thoughts about minivans as soon as you experience its sleek ride, robust handling and V-6 engine that accelerates quickly. Don’t worry – if there’s a minivan on your shopping list because you need it practicality, The odyssey there is also not disappointing. Its new Magic Seat system allows second-row seats to be placed in a variety of ways, including a configuration that will keep fussy children properly separated. The third row disappears into a recess in the floor to provide more cargo space. The cabin is not as well connected and focused on technology as competitors such as Chrysler Pacifica or Kia Carnivalbut Honda’s infotainment system offers not only the essentials, including an additional rear-seat entertainment system to occupy children.
What’s new in 2023?
The new mid-size Sport model joins the lineup this year and wears glossy black exterior accents, unique 19-inch wheels, black leather upholstery with red seams and red ambient lighting. The rest of the Odyssey lineup hasn’t changed, but Honda is adding a free scheduled maintenance plan for all 2023 models; it covers oil change and other necessary dealer maintenance services for the first two years or 24,000 miles of ownership. The base finish of the LX was taken from the herd.
Prices and which to buy
Go with the EX-L. The EX is well-equipped, but the EX-L adds luxurious features that will appeal to families, such as leather seats, optional USB ports at the rear and electrically operated rear doors.
Engine, transmission and performance
Lightweight, efficient and sophisticated, Odyssey is a beloved that does not require compromises. The Odyssey changes direction abruptly, and because of the steering wheel it’s easy to forget that you’re driving a three-wheeled van. Steering is direct and effort is easy, but more feedback from the road would be welcome. Driving enthusiasts won’t be thrilled – after all, it’s still a minivan – but the Odyssey is the best minivan to drive, and its agility makes it competent in corners and easy to drive on narrow roads. We tested Elite and found that his trip was not as compatible as in our long-term pacificabut its standard 19-inch wheels may be partly to blame. The EX-L we drove had 18-inch wheels and seemed to fit better on the Michigan roads we drive daily. However, on most pavements Odyssey provides a comfortable ride, and few passengers will complain.
Fuel economy and real miles per gallon
According to the EPA, the Odyssey is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. In our real-world highway testing, our test car exceeded the EPA rating by giving 30 miles per gallon. For comparison, our long-term Pacifica turned 33 miles per gallon. For more information on Odyssey fuel economy visit EPA website.
Interior, comfort and cargo
Transporting people and things to near and far is the main task of the minivan, and Odyssey completes this mission with aplomb. Its second and third rows are some of the most spacious in the class, and its seats in the second row are much more comfortable than the Pacifica. The ingenious Honda seats of the second row of the Magic Slide are shifted both from side to side and forward and rear, allowing the use of multiple configurations. Turn into a quiet cabin of points of inventive technology – for example, a camera in the cabin that allows you to monitor the children in the second and third rows – and Odyssey will be a truck suitable for the modern family. Its square shape and low load on the floor mean there is plenty of room to carry cargo, but some competitors do it better and with less hassle. Muscles are needed to remove these second-row seats, as the two suspension seats weigh 68 pounds each. Once removed, the Magic Slide seat mechanism remains on the floor, creating an obstacle to loading cargo. When the third row of seats was folded and the second removed, our testing showed that the Odyssey carried one suitcase less than the Pacifica.
Infotainment program and communication
All Odysseys get an infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touch screen called Display Audio. The software allows you to customize the menu layout and connect your smartphone not only via Bluetooth but also via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard for the Touring and Elite is a rear-seat entertainment system with built-in streaming programs.
Safety and driver assistance functions
Honda also offers a complete set driver assistance technology, called Honda Sensing, as standard equipment on all Odyssey models. For more information on the Odyssey crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Road Safety Insurance Institute (IIHS) websites. Key security features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane departure warning with lane keeping assistance
- Standard adaptive cruise control
Warranty coverage and maintenance
Honda’s standard warranty package on the Odyssey reflects the packages of most competitors and stands out in the crowd. Carnival is here the winner of the warranty, with a 10-year policy on its transmission and a limited warranty that lasts two years longer than any of its competitors.
- The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- The transmission warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Free scheduled maintenance is covered for two years or 24,000 miles
