• Ross Chastain needed to make up five positions on the final lap of the Xfinity 500 to advance to the final round of the NASCAR playoffs, and he did just that with a wild pass.
  • Inspired by the video games he played as a child, Chastain kept his foot on the gas and drove up the wall to pass playoff rival Denny Hamlin just before crossing the line.
  • Chastain even shifted into a higher gear as he pulled off a daring overtake, and seemed as surprised that the maneuver had worked as those watching.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. On the final lap of the 2022 Xfinity 500, the penultimate race in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Ross Chastain knew he had to pass Denny Hamlin to advance to the final round. With Hamlin five places ahead, Chastain made one of the craziest passes the sport has ever seen, going around the wall around the final two turns, slingshotting his way past several cars to win by the nose of Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota.

The move looked like something straight out of a video game, and Chastain readily admitted that she drew inspiration from the gaming world. “I think the first time I saw a race car do that was on the GameCube 2005,” he explained after the race, explaining that his brother used the same move to beat him when they played the game as teenagers.

Unlike virtual racing, however, this was a pass that could only work on the last lap. Prolonged contact with the wall certainly hurt Chestaine’s No. 1 Chevrolet. Chastain was well aware that the move could have crashed his car, saying, “I didn’t know if the physics would work to go around the corner.” But with so few races left and a Final Four spot in the playoff race, it was worth the risk. And the physics worked: Chastain was able to keep his foot on the gas while the wall guided him to the left, even shifting into fifth gear as he scraped the barrier. The only way to make this move more epic is if Chastain manages to capture his first Cup Series title in this coming weekend’s championship race at Phoenix Raceway.
