Sato is on top again, Grosjean is experiencing many fears

Sato, who was training on Day 1 (Day 2 was in the rain), put Dale Coyne Racing of RWR-Honda on top of speed charts with a lap of 227.519 miles per hour, just 39.5572 seconds around the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 2, 5 miles. Supported by the promise shown by Coyne cars in traffic, his team-mate David Malukas on a Coyne car with HMD, which was third in speed on the wheel at 226.869 mph. The pair was split by Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda at 227.335 mph.

But afterwards most of the talk was about the number of unacceptable misses that Ramen Grosjean of Andretti Autosport-Honda with Safe Barrier had. He had four sad slips to the wall at turn 2 and one at turn 4, each time watching closely for four or more cars, and each time not intimidating himself – but forcing his team to call him. He finished day 23^etc. the fastest.

Behind the top three were three more riders in the 226 mph zone. J.R. Hildebrand finished fourth in his AJ Foyt Racing-Chevrolet just five minutes before the end, ahead of NASCAR legend Jimmy Johnson, who again hit second-speed Ganassi-Honda and made the most laps (153). Pata O’Ward was Chevrolet’s second fastest in the Arrow McLaren SP. He was separated from his teammate Felix Rosenquist by another Ghanaian rider, Marcus Erickson.

India’s 2019 winner Simon Pagno took ninth place for the Meyer Shank Racing-Honda, and Ed Carpenter made sure his team’s two cars hit the top 10.

While teams like Ganassi and Andretti focused on racing, the Penske-Chevrolet team went for qualifying simulators, which is understandable given their crash in qualifying for this race last year. Thus, although 2018 Indy winner Will Power was only 21 seconds fastest overall, he turned around with the fastest non-towing speed of 224.325 miles per hour.

What is encouraging for Chevrolet, its closest rivals for this honor were ECR-Chevys Rinus Vikey and Carpenter. Their teammate Connor Daly was eighth, while teammates Power Scott McLaughlin and Joseph Newgarden were also in the top eight for non-towing. In the top 10 without towing Honda offenders were Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport, Devlin DeFrancesco and Coltan Hertha.
