The intelligent software of the new camera system scans the position of the driver’s hands and whether he is holding the device.
Germany plans to deploy new camera technology on its streets so as not to be distracted from driving. These cameras will be able to see in cars and determine if you are holding a smartphone. This is very important because distracted driving has become a common problem all over the world, especially due to the fact that smartphones are increasingly connected to vehicles. This makes it harder for many people not to mess with them in the car.
In 2021, there were 1,001 accidents caused by distractions while driving, for example, due to mobile phones, German Interior Minister Roger Levenz (SPD) told CarScoops. “With the new camera, we expect to further improve road safety,” he added.
The cameras of the new technology work similarly to conventional speed cameras, but instead of photographing the license plate, they take pictures through the windshield of the car. Intelligent software scans the position of the driver’s hands and whether he holds the device. Cameras will take pictures of the suspicious position of the hands, and the pictures will be appreciated by specially trained staff.
The test units of the cameras were installed in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, and the only single camera was installed over the road with a designated computer and directed downward at an angle that can be seen in the car cab below. For an hour of work the camera has already recorded 10 offenders.
As the technology worked, from June 1, 2022, officers will put it into operation as a three-month pilot project in Trier. After the next trial period in Mainz, the data will be analyzed and officials will decide to expand the system. Initially, the fine will be only $ 105 and one point in the violator’s license.
