We saw parts for Steam Deck goes on sale, but it turns out that iFixit was in no hurry to send these lists of retail sales live, and they were ripped out – although apparently it won’t be long before the relevant parts of the kit are available again.
You may remember it iFixit has struck a deal with Valve to become an official supplier spare parts for Steam Deck, and as the company clarified on Twitter, it mistakenly published these product pages along with prices.
Earlier today we published some pages related to our future launch of parts from Valve. They appeared earlier than we planned, so we ended up deleting them. If you have received an order for spare parts, we will fulfill it. đź’™ Stay tuned for a real launch soon!May 21, 2022
Assuming these are the right prices, not placeholders – on pages that appear to have been “test”, according to an iFixit representative on Reddit – price tags for various details were found Games on Linux noticed, and many are pleasantly clever.
A replacement screen costs ÂŁ 100 or ÂŁ 90 for the top anti-glare display (and ÂŁ 65 or ÂŁ 60 for the base screen) and a new fan costs ÂŁ 25 or ÂŁ 20.
Most prices seem to be well-marked on the affordable side, but if you want a new motherboard, you’re looking for a significant cost of £ 350 or £ 290. This is of course close to the cost of the new Steam Deck, which costs $ 399 or £ 349 for the entry-level model.
Note that iFixit made it clear that some orders were placed before the lists were deleted and anyone who received the order will be executed.
As you can imagine, there were a lot of people who bought fan replacements – they were complaints about some overly noisy models that are clogged with high whines – and in fact the fans sold out before the lists were removed, according to reports on the Internet. (Valve refers to this particular gremlin in works or tries with beta software updatenotice).
Some other people are reviewing the many parts that were available, and are considering buying all the components needed to create their own Steam Deck – but it will undoubtedly be expensive, even if theoretically possible (which we don’t know yet).
More realistically, there may be Deck owners who want to not just perform basic repairs on a tricky handle or perhaps a problematic fan, but perhaps upgrade a smaller Steam Deck model to a better screen in the top version. And seeing the price of a replacement display is likely to reassure those who have enough technological chops to be able to open their device and turn off the screen.
