Tesla has released a home charging station, or wall plug as it calls it, that works with other electric vehicles, not just Tesla cars.

Unlike all other electric car manufacturers, Tesla uses its own proprietary connector for cars made for the North American market. This means that the company’s charging network and products, such as home chargers, only work with its own electric vehicles.

Tesla’s design has been praised for being much easier to handle and more efficient than the CCS/J1772 standard adopted by the rest of the industry.

It even happened earlier this year an attempt to make the Tesla connector the new standardbut it seems it was in vain.

Tesla is leaning toward opening its own charging network and products for electric cars from other automakers.

The company shows what will happen add CCS connectors to Supercharger stations in North America as it was already in Europe.

Tesla even briefly launched last year a new version of the home charging station, wall jack, with a J1772 connector instead of its own. This meant that the charger was aimed at non-Tesla EV buyers.

However, the product did not remain in stock for long.

Tesla has now released a brand new version of its J1772 wall connector for $550. site:

Our J1772 wall connector is a convenient charging solution for both Tesla and third-party electric vehicles and is ideal for homes, apartments, hospitality facilities and workplaces.

Based on Tesla’s description, it seems the automaker may be chasing the commercial charging market:

If you are a developer, manager or owner of commercial real estate and are interested in purchasing more than 12 J1772 wall connectors, visit Commercial Charging.

But at $550, it’s extremely competitive with any home charging station on the market, especially when you factor in the power distribution and connectivity features:

With an extra range of up to 44 mph, a 24-foot cable, multiple power settings, and a versatile indoor and outdoor design, the J1772 wall jack offers unmatched convenience. It can also share power to maximize existing electrical capacity, automatically distributing power and allowing multiple vehicles to be charged simultaneously.

Tesla’s own cars can also use the station, but they’ll need to use the adapter that comes with the car.

Otherwise, Tesla owners will have to use the original Tesla wall jack, which is equipped with Tesla’s proprietary plug and costs $400 less.
