• In our sound level testing, 2022 BMW iX The xDrive50 was one of the quietest cars we’ve ever tested.
  • The iX produces less internal noise than the latest BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Classand it is much quieter than any Tesla.
  • The iX also ran 290 miles on our highway test at 75 miles per hour, the second longest EV we’ve ever tested.

Welcome Car and drivers Test centerwhere we increase test numbers. We have been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to reinforce our subjective impressions (you can see how we check here). A more complete overview of the BMW iX xDrive50 2022 can be found here.

One of the hallmarks of automotive luxury is a cruise in pristine silence. Many people believe that electric vehicles are extremely quiet – the use of electrons to power engines eliminates the hum and buzz of constant miniature explosions that occur in the cylinders of internal combustion engines. But at highway speeds EVs aren’t necessarily quieter, and they’re sensitive to the same tire noise and wind noise as drive vehicles. However, BMW iX 2022starting at $ 84,195, works great even in this environment, proving to be one of the quietest cars we’ve ever tested.

Our test car was a 2022 BMW iX xDrive50, which, after adding a set of extras, cost a whopping $ 104,020. xDrive50 is an entry-level iX trim in the US that is powered by an electric motor on each axle, jointly generating 516 horsepower. The IX we tested rode on additional 22-inch wheels shod in Bridgestone Alenza 001 B-Silent summer tires, making its silence even more impressive.

Here in Car and driver, we determine the internal sound pressure levels using a portable sound meter Brüel & Kjær Class 1. We make three measurements: at idle, with the throttle wide open and while driving at 70 mph. Sound pressure measurements are performed on a logarithmic scale, which means that a small quantitative increase in data represents a significant noticeable difference in the real world. For example, each increase of 3 dBA means a doubling of sound pressure. We only compare data measured at the same test facility because our test track in Michigan is rougher and noisier than our test track in California.

During our testing, the BMW iX recorded an average of 66 dBA with the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor and 63 dBA when driving at a steady speed of 70 mph. This makes it one of the quietest cars we’ve ever tested. Only four cars were quieter at cruising speed on the highway – in 2019 Bentley Bentayga V-8 (61 dBA), 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan (62 dBA), 2020 Audi S8 (62 dBA), and in 2019 Jaguar I-Pace (62 dBA). The IX was much quieter than this quartet, with the gas wide open, even surpassing the all-electric I-Pace, which measured 71 dBA at high acceleration. And the iX is much quieter than the quietest Tesla we’ve ever tested, the 2021 Model S Long Range Plus, which has a noise level of 66 dBA.

BMW’s EV SUV outperforms some seriously luxury vehicles to keep quiet on the highway. IX measured one decibel quieter than in 2020 BMW 745e connected 2021 hybrid Mercedes-Benz S580 4Maticand 2021 Cadillac Escalade 600. IX is also easily superior to these three land-based yachts with gas propulsion when it comes to no noise during maximum acceleration.

The rest of the iX at highway speeds can also be obtained over long periods of time when it has passed 290 miles in our highway testing at 75 miles per hour. This is the second best result we have ever recorded. It’s also an impressive 92 percent of its 315-mile EPA range, which represents a much larger percentage of the nominal range than is the norm for EVs. Only Tesla Model S Long Range Plus, which traveled 320 mileswent further in our testing, although we totally expect Lucid Air to jump to the top our leaderboard for EV distance testing once we test one.
