- The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged M4 CSL produces 543 horsepower, which is 40 horsepower more than the M4 Competition, and the car is also 240 pounds lighter than its counterpart.
- The steering is more focused on the track thanks to lower posture, standard high-performance tires and carbon brakes, and more aggressive suspension tuning.
- This special edition M4 CSL will be limited to 1,000 units worldwide and costs $ 140,895.
BMW The new 2023 M4 CSL is a special edition for track days, optimized for those who are ready to give up the daily life support of the driver for a significant increase in performance. CSL stands for Competition Sports Lightweight, and the specs show that it’s more than just a marketing term. They also show that this car will almost certainly be a beast that not everyone will like.
It is equipped with the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter in-line six that feeds M4 competition, but the peak turbocharged CSL was increased from 24.7 psi to 30.5 psi, up 24 percent. The dual-circuit cooling system has been upgraded to meet not only the extra power but also the harsh use of the tracks. The result is 543 horsepower, which is 40 horsepower more than in the Competition, with the same peak power of 6,250 rpm. Maximum torque has also not changed and is 479 lb-ft, which means that the eight-speed automatic transmission and transmission from the Competition can be used as before, up to the internal ratios of automatic and final transmission inside the M Sport differential. However, switching points have been optimized for performance, and engine and transmission mounts have been significantly strengthened. There should be much less slack and twist in the power supply, but increased vibration in the cab will almost certainly be a side effect.
The effect of this extra power is enhanced by a significant weight reduction of 240 pounds. Each of the M4 Competition’s horsepower has 7.7 pounds to move, but the extra power and lighter weight of the CSL is reduced significantly to 6.7 pounds per pony. BMW claims that acceleration to 60 mph is 3.6 seconds, compared to the competition’s 3.8 seconds, but we think it will be better.
The CSL is a two-seater that has gotten rid of the rear seats and seat belts to save 46 pounds right on top. Plus, its solid carbon front buckets save £ 53, but you can add £ 32 back when ordering adjustable carbon seats. Another £ 33 savings come from the use of lightweight sound insulation – and possibly less – in some areas. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used inside and out, including for the center console, saving 9 pounds. At the rear of the exhaust pipe another 9-pound savings are achieved through the use of a titanium muffler that is tuned so that it can be fully appreciated inside the cabin, where it provides the driver with accurate acoustic feedback in response to accelerator movements and clearly conveys engine performance. Which is a workaround to say it’s louder.
The CSL comes standard with a combination of high-performance 275 / 35ZR-19 front and 285 / 30ZR-20 rear tires, which is optional on the competition, but the wheels are mounted on exclusive CSL forged alloys with thin spokes that reduce weight. The carbon-ceramic brakes, which are optional for other M4s, are standard here, and the wheels, brakes and some lightweight suspension components save another 46 pounds, with much of it being unsprung weight.
The suspension squats about 0.3 inches lower than in the Competition, and it has been calibrated using springs optimized for CSL, adaptive damper and software, and changed stabilizer settings. It should also be noted the use of additional hinges in some parts of the rear suspension instead of rubber bushings in the interests of greater accuracy on the track. This last piece reminds us of similar suspension changes made in Porsche Cayman GT4 RSwhich in turn gave stellar controllability as well as questionable fitness for life.
All the signs point to a much more powerful and raw BMW M4, which will really become a more powerful weapon for tracks. There is a focused approach, and it should be to the liking of those who want to put their M4 on the track. How many BMW fans are looking for what the M4 CSL has to offer? We’ll see as soon as we find out how long it will take to sell out 1,000 units – $ 140,895 each.
