For coffee lovers on the road there are several portable coffee makers that compete in consistency and efficiency Aeropress. Released in 2005, the original model – a cylindrical chamber with a paper filter and a sealed piston – gave a high-quality cup of coffee with low acidity and bitterness. The 5.5-inch camera can brew up to 10 ounces of coffee at a time, perfect for people who need to pick me up at the office, hotel or while camping.

In the following years AeroPress became a cult hit and even launched the World AeroPress Championship under the guidance of enthusiasts. Despite the fact that the original design has not changed, in 2019 the company released a reduced version for travel, which was named AeroPress Go. Available at the same price, it has a slightly smaller brewing capacity (8.0 ounces) and comes with its own 15-ounce mug that securely holds the chamber, piston and other brewing equipment.

Sounds good, theoretically. But how to be in practice? To make sure the AeroPress Go travel trim matches the hype of the original – and more importantly, better suited for camping and travel – we’ve practiced it to see for ourselves.

What’s good about AeroPress Go

It’s compact

AeroPress Go manages to invest many opportunities for brewing in a small space. Even compared to the original design, this is a big step forward.

In the original the dimensions of the chamber and piston were 5.4 x 4.2 x 3.8 inches, but you had to also pack a mug, scoop, filters, stirrer, etc. than the original brewer (5.3 x 3.9 x 3.9 inches =). The chamber and piston are slightly smaller and they brew 2 ounces of coffee less than in the original design – but this trade-off is worth it because of the greater mobility.

It gives you control

As in the original, Aeropress Go is a braga control. Depending on your preferences, you can score accurate extraction times and concentrations for your favorite beans, unlike other portable brewing methods. Also, since it’s designed for a single cup, you don’t risk over-extracting like it would in a multi-cup French press.

Here’s how it works. Just pour medium and finely ground coffee into the chamber, add hot water (not boiling), stir and dip. The longer you wait before pressing the plunger, the more compounds are pulled out of the beans (but the grinding size and water temperature also play into this equation).

That makes damn great coffee, Diane

Without a doubt, AeroPress Go makes a great cup of coffee. The brand notes that its coffee “contains about one-fifth of the acidity of coffee from drip brewing and one-ninth of the acidity of coffee brewed in the French press”. This means you can enjoy the nuances of roasting wherever you are.

Compared to other travel options – traditional pouring, French press, instant coffee – it ranks first in the package in terms of flavor alone. So if you are considering mobility, it is a simple matter for those who are far away.

What is not perfect in AeroPress Go

There are some moving parts

Unlike pouring beer, which uses a filter, a brewer and a cup, or a French press, which uses a decanter and a cup, AeroPress Go is a little more involved. Even in its simplest form, it is still a piston, chamber, filter cover, filter and cup. For people who change things easily or don’t like a more complicated process, this may not be for you.

But a few extra steps give a noticeable gain as a brew. Also, while AeroPress has smaller parts, these parts take up less space in your bag than parts from other brewers – and they’re very durable, so you don’t have to worry about them breaking down along the way.

Not for extreme minimalists

Ultra-light hikers and extreme minimalists beware: the AeroPress Go weighs 11.5 ounces, excluding coffee and filters. That’s a few ounces more than the original, thanks to the mug included – but it may be more than some hyperfocused athletes want.

If this is the case – as with everything in the ultralight / minimalist space – you are making concessions. In this case, you can choose a decent instant brew to reduce weight. However, the final kvass will not be of the same quality as something from AeroPress.

AeroPress Go: Verdict

You will find it hard to find a better portable coffee maker than the AeroPress Go. The small, sturdy shape allows you to pack it in backpacks, duffel bags, handbags or suitcases without thinking. The brewing method is very simple and quick – and, most of all, provides a great cup of Joe.

For $ 40 you can get the comfort and enjoyment of great coffee, whether you’re in the mountains, on a remote beach, at a hotel or anywhere else you travel. Heck, it’s even great to use at home.
