SUVs are sought after cars in the market. They have gone beyond their path-breaking roots to cover virtually every market segment, from die-hard family truck to a high performance monster. This also includes available cars now as well. Buyers who were previously limited to sedans and eco-coaches can now purchase a new crossover.

Cheap SUVs are not world leaders. They tend to have low base engines. And they will not overwhelm you with the quality of the interior. But they can provide some ride height, cargo capacity and capability. And a few newer ones even bring some sophisticated exterior styling.

Here are the cheapest SUVs you can buy in 2022. Note that the vehicle had to have four-wheel drive to meet our definition of an SUV, which excluded some cars like the Hyundai Venue.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the cheapest SUV you can get with all-wheel drive. It’s not particularly sexy or fun to drive (you get what you pay for). But it comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile transmission warranty.

  • Cargo space: 49.5 cubic feet

The Kona is Hyundai’s subcompact SUV that sits between the Venue and the Tucson. It’s fun to drive—especially with the upgraded engines—and that quality (not the stingy trunk) is why the judges named it the 2019 North American SUV of the Year.

  • Horsepower/Torque: 147 hp/139 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 45.8 cubic feet
  • MSRP: $21,990 ($23,490 AWD)

The EcoSport was sort of the one-tone crossover that Ford built the Maverick to destroy — and it will be one of its first victims to leave the lineup after 2022. In its favor, it comes with standard four-wheel drive and has a 2,000-pound towing capacity, if you’re the kind of person who will use the EcoSport for towing.

  • Horsepower/Torque: 166 hp/149 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 50 cubic feet
  • MSRP: $22,040

The Corolla is rarely the sexiest car on the road. His superpower is being an unkillable cockroach. The Corolla Cross, as the name suggests, is a Corolla, but a crossover.

  • Horsepower/Torque: 169 hp/150 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 26.5 cubic feet (trunk)
  • MSRP: $22,445 ($23,745)

We are big fans Mazda 3 hatchback. But the markets want SUVs, not hatchbacks. Mazda essentially took the Mazda 3, tweaked it a bit, and called it the CX-30 crossover. It’s brilliant.

  • Cargo space: 45.2 cubic feet
  • MSRP: $22,500 ($22,500 AWD)

Kia struck a big blow with Telluride. The Seltos, launched a year later, is Kia’s attempt to be that, but subcompact. Fully loaded, it will surpass the competition with its looks, space and lively driving dynamics.

  • Cargo space: 62.8 cubic feet
  • MSRP: $22,840 ($22,840 AWD)

Chevy has revived the Trailblazer nameplate for the 2020 model year … as a tiny crossover. It looks great, borrowing some styling cues from the larger Blazer crossover. It offers a decent amount of space. But by most accounts, the car isn’t that impressive to drive.

  • Horsepower/Torque: 137 hp/162 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 54.4 cubic feet.
  • MSRP: $23,295 ($25,295 AWD)

If you were planning a product for Honda, you’d want an “11th-gen Civic…but a crossover.” It’s almost literally the new 2023 Honda HR-V, a great crossover that suffers from an underpowered engine.

  • Horsepower/Torque: 158 hp/138 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 55.1 cubic feet.
  • MSRP: $23,650 ($25,150 AWD)

The Taos is VW’s all-new entry-level compact model for 2022, which sits below the Tiguan. It’s the de facto replacement for the Volkswagen Golf and – as much as it hurts to admit it – suits modern needs and tastes better than the Mk8 Golf

  • Horsepower/Torque: 158 hp/184 lb-ft
  • Cargo space: 65.9 cubic feet
  • MSRP: $24,155 ($27,790 AWD)
