- Dodge is expected to reveal Hornet in August, and now a new crossover is undergoing spy testing.
- Hornet will be based on Alfa Romeo Tonaleand incredibly similar to his Italian brother.
- The Tonale plug-in hybrid powertrain is also expected to run on the Dodge with a 1.3-liter in-line four with a turbocharger and electric motor on the rear axle.
In late April, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis confirmed rumors that the brand would will soon release a new compact SUV. Revival’s Hornet A name used by American Motors Corporation in the 1970s, the crossover will be based on a recently discovered Alfa Romeo Tonaleand blurred, leaked images seemed to have confirmed this back in February. Now Hornet has undergone spy tests that show how similar the new Dodge model will be to its brother Alfa Romeo.
In the photos we see that the body shape of the Hornet is basically identical to the body shape of Tonale. The main changes are on the front panel with a simplified design of the headlights and a rectangular ventilation hole between the upper and lower grilles, similar to the view observed on the stronger versions Charger. The taillights and rear bumper are very similar to the Tonale, but this prototype Hornet has other wheels, different from the leaked images that showed it riding on the wheels of Alfa Romeo’s “telephone dial”.
The Hornet is expected to arrive with a hybrid Tonale unit with a 1.3-liter in-line four and an electric motor on the rear axle that delivers a total of 272 horsepower. It is unclear whether Dodge will get another power unit Tonale, a non-hybrid 2.0-liter in-line four with turbocharging and 256 horsepower. According to Kuniskis, Dodge is looking to introduce the Hornet in August, so we’ll have to wait a few more months until we get details on the first new Dodge model in a decade.
