    When Ford restarted Maverick a sign like a compact pickup for the 2022 model year it did so with a standard hybrid transmission, which was a bit of a surprise. Hybrid trucks are nothing new, and Ford’s own F-150 can be had with a partially electric transmission, but the Maverick front-wheel drive and turbocharged petrol engine are unique in the pickup market.

These non-hybrid variants, however, are superior in our testing to the Maverick hybrid. Both Hyundai and Mazda in our highway tests released 38 miles per gallon, while Honda returned 36 miles per gallon. However, these cars do not offer a comfortable 4.5-foot-long cargo bed or its towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.
