- Honda has announced plans to release a fuel cell version of the CR-V.
- This hydrogen version of the compact SUV will be produced in the US starting in 2024.
- It will likely look similar to the standard CR-V, but with a few visual tweaks.
Honda will give the hydrogen fuel cell car another try with a new version popular crossover CR-V which will be built in Ohio starting in 2024. It will serve as a replacement for Clarity fuel cella hydrogen-powered sedan that was offered in California from 2017 to 2020. Interestingly, this new model will also offer the option of connecting a battery pack to allow it to offer a small electric-only range without having to rely on a hydrogen supply.
This fuel cell vehicle will look the same as the standard CR-V inside and out, except for a few small visual differences such as badging, trim and possibly different headlights and taillights. Details on the new powertrain are scarce, but we do know that it will use a new powertrain developed in collaboration with General Motors. This fuel cell unit, which essentially turns liquid hydrogen into electricity to power the electric motor, is said to have improved the old Clarity’s drivetrain and also uses 80 percent less platinum than before.
As with the Clarity, the powertrain is housed entirely under the hood, and the CR-V’s boxier shape should also help with interior packaging, meaning the gas model’s roomy five-seat layout should be retained. The hydrogen tank will be mounted in the rear, however, which may compromise cargo space somewhat.
The concept of a plug-in hydrogen vehicle is new, and Honda says it will allow owners to charge the CR-V in the same way as a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle to top up the car’s battery. It probably won’t give much range as fuel cell cars only have small battery packs, but it could offer a bit more flexibility, at least around town, if you need a bit of extra range in a pinch or to get to a gas station.
They will be joined by the CR-V on fuel cells Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo as the only hydrogen cars sold in the States. Honda will likely release more information and specifications over the next year as it prepares to begin production of this new model in 2024.
