If you thought 1,111 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds from Lucid Air Dream Edition was extreme, get a load of Lucid Air Sapphire that broke the coating on Friday at Monterey Car Week. The Sapphire adds a third engine that produces more than 1,200 horsepower and drops the 0-60 mph time below 2.0 seconds. It also received a host of performance upgrades to make it the marque’s best track car.

Directly aimed at the Tesla Model S Plaid, the Bright air Sapphire also promises a 0-100 mph time of less than 4.0 seconds, a quarter-mile time of less than 9.0 seconds, and a top speed of more than 200 mph. Lucid claims it’s the most powerful sedan in the world, electric or not.

If he wants to claim better performance than Plaid, he’s going to have to tweak it Nürburgring in less than 7:35.579.

The third engine sits on the rear axle and is joined by new heat exchanger technology and higher coolant flow rates to handle all that power. The battery system has also been upgraded to handle more power and heat. Each engine is capable of producing up to 670 hp, so there’s plenty of room for even more power. Lucid says it will later confirm actual horsepower numbers and show instrumented demonstrations of the car’s capabilities.

The car was also designed for stops and turns.

“Our goal with this, our first Sapphire model, is to complement the exceptional powertrain with sharper, more responsive handling dynamics and improved body control,” said David Lickfold, Lucid Group director of chassis and vehicle dynamics. “At the same time, it was important to maintain the exceptional ride quality that Lucid Air has become known for.”

With that in mind, Lucid engineers stiffened the springs and bushings, changed the damper settings, and retuned the ABS, traction and stability control, and electric power steering. They also fitted the car with carbon-ceramic brakes and fitted wider Michelin PS4S tires measuring 265/35R20 up front and 295/30R21 rear on staggered Aero Sapphire rims. The wheels have carbon fiber covers for better airflow. However, given the performance boost and wider tires, expect electric range to be lower than the Air Grand Touring Performance’s 445 miles.

The two rear motors can also enable advanced torque vectoring. In fact, Lucid says it can deliver torque in opposite directions: the outside wheel can receive power and the inside wheel can apply regenerative braking. Lucid says this system is faster, quieter and smoother than a brake-and-rear-steering-based setup.

Lucid also made changes to the aerodynamics, balancing the extra downforce with less drag, but the company didn’t elaborate on those changes.

The Sapphire edition also means the addition of Sapphire Blue paint, which will grace all early cars. Brands dark package Stealth will also be standard on Air Sapphire models.

Inside, the Air Sapphire has received a new color theme called Sapphire Mojave. It features dark colors with blue contrast stitching and dark Mojave wood veneer. The interior also features thick bolstered seats with 18-way power adjustment, upholstered in black leather and Alcantara with standard heating, cooling and massage. The steering wheel, upper door panels and interior trim are also covered in Alcantara. Lucid also gives the car a dedicated screen and its own driving modes and performance settings. The photo shows Sapphire, Dragstrip, Hot Lap and Endurance modes, as well as a lap timer.

The Air Sapphire will cost from $249,000 to destination. The first deliveries will begin in the first half of next year, and interested buyers will be able to make reservations starting August 23. Lucid noted that all future models will get Sapphire versions, making it a performance brand name.
