The Nissan Qashqai SUV, which recently debuted in India, has scored 2.5 stars in the Green NCAP test for cleaner energy.

Nissan Recently unveiled as one of the Japanese automaker’s upcoming models in India, the Qashqai SUV could very well be one of the cleanest cars on Indian roads. The SUV has recently been tested by Green NCAP, an agency that certifies a car’s environmental performance ranging from energy efficiency to pollution. Qahsqai recently returned with an average rating of 2.5 stars during the test. It also scored seven out of 10 on the Clean Air Index, meaning it will pollute less despite being a petrol car.

The Green NCAP-tested Qashqai SUV had a 1.3-liter DIG-T turbocharged gasoline engine under the hood, which is mated to a CVT gearbox and is capable of generating 158 hp. maximum power. Following the Green NCAP test, it concluded: “The car demonstrates a well-functioning emissions control system with potential for improvement, particularly for the currently unregulated NH3 emissions. A good lab result can also be easily reproduced on the street, significantly reducing the impact of combustion engine vehicles on air quality.”

According to Green NCAP, the Nissan Qashqai SUV tends to struggle with increased fuel consumption during dynamic highway driving and at high speeds. As a result of the test, fuel efficiency was about 6.7 liters for every 100 km in the real world. However, the road test concluded that the Qashqai’s fuel efficiency is relatively better compared to the petrol SUV, returning a score of almost 4 out of 10.

In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, the Qashqai scored just 2.1 out of 10. It fared poorly in Green NCAP’s highway tests.

The Nissan Qashqai, which was launched in India earlier this month, comes with a hybrid version called e-POWER. It has a 12-volt mild hybrid system that uses the engine to generate electricity, while the front wheels are driven by the electric motor, providing a more linear, lossless power delivery. The engine is capable of generating 158 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque and comes paired with either a manual transmission (2WD) or an Xtronic automatic transmission.
