- Volkswagen ID.Aero is the latest member of the VW electric ID family.
- This is a mid-size sedan with a style similar to the ID.4 SUV, and a stated range of more than 300 miles.
- This is a concept version, but VW has confirmed that the production car will soon appear in the US.
Volkswagen has launched its family of electric car IDs with the most popular body style – Compact SUV ID.4—And then she went a little crazy with funky, retro ID.Buzz minivan. Now he is curbing the situation with another familiar silhouette: a medium-sized sedan ID.Aero. Although shown here as a concept car, a production model based on the same MEB platform as other cars will soon appear.
The name ID.Aero emphasizes its aerodynamic qualities, and indeed, Volkswagen claims that the drag coefficient of the sedan is 0.23. It’s not as good as Mercedes-Benz EQS ’stated 0.20, but nonetheless pretty slippery. This should help its range compared to the higher ID.4, which has an EPA rating at a range of up to 275 miles. Volkswagen says ID.Aero will provide a driving range of 385 miles on the softer WLTP cycle, and we think it will exceed the 300 mile mark on the tougher US EPA cycle.
Approximately 190 inches in length ID.Aero is the size of a mid-size Passat sedan. Its design largely mimics the design of its brother’s SUV, with similar headlights and taillights, chrome trim around the roof line, a black roof and familiar side surfaces. Touch-sensitive door handles and large 22-inch wheels may not go into production, but we believe the end product won’t change much compared to this concept. There is no photo of the interior yet.
VW says this sedan will become its electric flagship model, and that it will be sold in Europe, China and North America. When it arrives in the US, it will compete with models such as Tesla Model 3,, Hyundai Ioniq 6and Polestar 2. Look for the serial version of ID.Aero to debut next year.
