• The Zeekr 009 is a new electric minivan from Geely, which also owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.
  • The 009 is powered by a 116.0 or 140.0 kWh battery pack, and the twin-motor setup produces 536 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque.
  • Inside, there’s a 15.6-inch screen for the second-row captain’s chairs and a 20-speaker Yamaha surround sound system.

While Volvo’s path to the era of electric cars leads many SUVs — from XC40 and C40 Recharge to the future full-sized EX90— another brand owned by Volvo’s parent company, Geely, takes a different approach. Sec, which is sold exclusively in the Chinese market, began production of its first electric car last year, with the 001 taking the form of a body-hugging wagon. Now, Zeekr has unveiled its second electric car, the 009, which arrives in the body of a brutalist-style blocky minivan.

The 009 rides on the same platform as the 001, which also underlies it Smart #1. Two versions of the electric minivan are available. One comes with a 116.0kWh battery pack that provides 436 miles of range, and upgrading to a massive 140.0kWh battery pack gives a range of 511 miles in the Chinese test cycle, which generally gives more optimistic results than testing , conducted by the EPA. Zeekr claims the 116.0kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes. The 009 also shares a twin-motor transmission with the 001, giving the all-wheel-drive minivan 536 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque. That boost is enough to propel this brick to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Along with impressive performance figures, the 009 stands out for its unique design. The blocky front grille features a series of vertical LED light bars and shiny chrome trim, and while the front lights are a simple inverted U-shape, the taillights feature dozens of complex LED blocks. Despite the chunky styling, Zeekr claims a drag coefficient of 0.27 for the 009. The 20-inch wheels are supported by multi-link suspension arms at the front and a multi-link design and air suspension at the rear.

With the 009 stretching 205 inches long, its interior is cavernous and luxurious, with room for six and leather-wrapped massage captain’s chairs in the second row. The dashboard centers on a 15.4-inch touchscreen with a 10.25-inch screen in place of the gauge cluster, while the second row features a 15.6-inch ceiling-mounted screen. There’s also a 20-speaker Yamaha surround sound system. 009 is packed with futuristic technology, with voice and face recognition, a virtual assistant with artificial intelligence and 30 advanced driver assistance systems that work through a dozen cameras and 13 radar sensors.

The 116.0 kWh version will cost $68,450 at current exchange rates, while the 009 version with 140.0 kWh will cost $80,660. Deliveries are due to begin in January, and while the 009 will likely never reach US shores, we’re hoping the out-of-the-box thinking will carry over to Geely’s other brands: Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.
