During yesterday’s evening opening of Art Dodge Charger Daytona SRT ConceptCEO Tim Kuniskis acknowledged the carpocalypse, saying “nobody wants cars anymore.”

While that may sound overly dramatic, it’s the sad truth, as Kuniskis noted that trucks and SUVs outsell cars by a four-to-one margin. Given this, it is not surprising that coupes and sedans have them fell to the side as countless automakers have scaled back their lineups or exited segments altogether.

Still, Dodge isn’t throwing in the towel, as the company believes that emotional design and extreme performance will keep muscle cars going for years to come. The Charger Daytona SRT Concept embodies that idea as it’s a retro-futuristic muscle car that’s sure to turn heads.

The current Charger and Challenger was always difficult to follow, but the designers were given an almost impossible task with sometimes conflicting goals. In particular, the concept was intended to be aerodynamic while evoking the brick-like muscle cars of Dodge’s past.

Fortunately, the Charger Daytona SRT concept didn’t turn out that way anonymous kissel that their former owners produce. Dodge deliberately wanted to avoid this, and while they wanted better aerodynamics, “looking stupid” was more important than having the lowest drag coefficient.

The sound of electric performance

Exterior design is only part of the emotional experience offered by muscle cars, as sound also plays an important role. While many electric cars like to be quiet, Dodge wanted the Charger Daytona SRT concept to be loud and proud.

To do this, they developed the Fratzonic chambered exhaust system, which “uses a one-of-a-kind sound through an amplifier and tuning chamber located at the rear of the vehicle.” This makes the car impossible to ignore as it screams up to 126dB, making the concept as loud as the Hellcat.

The loud exhaust is only part of the story, as Dodge has developed unique sounds for its electric muscle car. It’s a little hard to explain, but as you can hear in the video, the car comes to life on startup with a loud grunt. It then turns into a sound that resembles a storm that can be interrupted by electrical revolutions. While it’s not the buzz many of us use either, it’s the productivity wave of the future.
