The Toyota Halo sports car, the 2023 Supra, delivers enough excitement, style and drama to make up for more than the brand quiet sedans, hatchbacks and SUVs. Developed and built together BMW Z4 convertible, Supra offers similar build quality and simpler but still beautiful interior materials. Four-cylinder turbocharged entry-level 255 hp. provides enough power, but we can’t help but admire the ferocious, extra 3.0-liter 3.0-liter turbocharged BMW that makes this two-seater. Rear-wheel drive is the only installation, and the confident chassis and sharp steering of the Supra allow it to come to life on winding roads and racetracks. Sure, for some Toyota fans it may borrow too much from the BMW parts box, and its sleek exterior design creates some horribly large blind spots, but even so the Supra remains one of our favorite sports cars. It’s a car driver and a hobby enthusiast.
What’s new in 2023?
Toyota is certainly prompted by the shouts of motorists about the lack of Supra mechanical transmission, added a six-speed handle on the menu for the 2023 model year. The manual will be optional with a more powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged, in-line six from BMW and will be standard for a new special edition called the A91-MT. The A91-MT will be limited to just 500 copies in the US and will come in matte white or matte gray with a brown and black two-tone interior. Other changes to the Supra line-up by 2023 include a revised mood for the suspension and steering systems, as well as the introduction of a new driving mode called Hairpin +, which allows you to additionally scroll wheels on one of the rear tires to help spin Supra around superb corners. .
Prices and which to buy
Although the four-cylinder Supra 2.0 has lost a bit of emotion from driving, we believe that the extraordinary acceleration of the six-cylinder 3.0 is worth the extra cost. We would have missed the Driver Assist package, which adds adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and lane keeping assistance, which is more annoying than helpful. Each Supra gives a one-year membership to the National Motorsports Association, which has sanctioned sports car races, and a free day at a high-performance event. And just that: the money you save without buying the Driver’s Assist package can be obtained for extra time on the track and fresh tires.
Engine, transmission and performance
By 2023, all Supra models were with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive; this year’s six-speed manual mechanical engine is finally an option, but only with an additional 3.0-liter in-line six-line turbocharged. On the test track, our long-term 2020 Supra 3.0 (with an eight-speed automatic) laid some seriously impressive acceleration figures: Acceleration to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 100 mph in 9.5 cycles. This puts him in the major leagues against Chevy Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman GTSand BMW M2 competition. In fact, it’s even faster than that the vaunted Supra of the fourth generation which was powered by a series of turbocharged in-line six with a capacity of 320 horsepower. Despite its productive potential, the Supra suspension is forgiving enough to ride daily. Its steering is precise, well-balanced and straightforward, which enhances its attractiveness from driving. Cheaper four-cylinder model a fast 4.7-second run at 60 miles per hour on our test track. It’s faster than Supra’s German cousin – the BMW Z4 – who managed a 5.0 seconds 60 miles per hour. The only downside we found in the performance of our long-term Supra was the ease with which it got stuck in the snow.
Fuel economy and real miles per gallon
The most efficient Supra is the one with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets EPA ratings of 25 mph in the city and 32 on the highway. The more powerful Supra 3.0 rating is still pretty good at 22 mph in the city and 30 on the highway. It is more efficient than the Camaro, Cayman GTS and M2. On our test route for fuel economy on the highway at 75 mph, the six-cylinder Supra topped its rating on the highway, giving 34 miles per gallon; with the turbo-4, the Supra delivered a stellar 38 miles per gallon. Interior, comfort and cargo
The driver-oriented cab is dense, and although the double-bubble roof provides some extra space, the tallest drivers feel squeezed. The cargo space is also cramped, but the cargo area (which can be accessed via a hatchback) is large enough to accommodate a pair of suitcases or about a week’s amount of groceries for two. In our test we were able to place four hand luggage behind the rear seats. Most of Toyota’s interior is in conjunction with the Z4, so those familiar with the BMW switchgear and infotainment controls will feel right at home.
Infotainment program and communication
Speaking of infotainment, the Supra’s central display is an 8.8-inch unit with a very slightly redesigned version of the latest BMW iDrive interface. The digital pressure gauge display – which actually boasts a crisp design compared to the Bimmer – is standard across the range. Navigation and Apple CarPlay capabilities are available, but Android Auto is not offered. A 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional, but we expect a standard 10-speaker audio system will suffice for most buyers given the Supra’s cabin size.
Safety and driver assistance functions
Toyota offers a lot driver assistance functions as standard for the Supra line, including automatic emergency braking.
