Wolfspeed, a silicon carbide and gallium nitride technology company, plans to build a new 200mm silicon carbide wafer manufacturing facility in Chatham County, North Carolina. The wafers will be delivered to the company’s Mohawk Valley factory, a silicon carbide manufacturing facility.

The company hopes the new facility will allow it to increase production capacity by a factor of 10 over its materials facility in Durham, and says the first phase of construction will be completed in 2024 at a cost of about $1.3 billion .

“Between 2024 and the end of the decade, the company will add additional capacity as needed, eventually occupying more than one million square feet on the 445-acre site,” says Wolfspeed.
