The air filter can be controlled by a switched cooling air inlet, and its mechanical function is similar to that of a vacuum cleaner.

Audi is collaborating with supplier MANN+HUMMEL on a pilot project to develop particulate filters for electric vehicles. The air filter will collect particulate matter from surrounding areas both while driving and charging. It was designed to address the need to improve air quality in cities during the first pilot phase. This technology will be demonstrated at the Greentech festival in London.

The air filter functions similarly to stationary systems and provides absorption of the vehicle’s own particulate emissions. Regardless of the vehicle’s drive system, 85% of fine dust particles in traffic originate from brake, tire or road wear. These micro dust particles can be easily inhaled and cause health damage.

Audi’s pilot project to remove particulate matter from the environment was launched in 2020 and will run for four years. “This particulate filter is an example of our commitment to innovation for the benefit of all and our successful cooperation with specialist suppliers,” said Fabian Gros, project manager for the development of fastening systems at Audi AG.

The air filter is integrated into the vehicle’s existing airflow in front of the radiator, meaning that the necessary vehicle modifications are required to reduce costs. The filter can be controlled by a switched cooling air inlet and its mechanical functions are similar to those of a vacuum cleaner. Fine dust particles get stuck in the filter and air can still pass through it.

Until now, Audi has used this filter in e-tron test cars. While driving, the technology passively filters the air due to the movement of the car; the air passes through a filter system that captures even the smallest particles. During stationary charging, the built-in fan circulates ambient air through the radiator. The system takes advantage of this process and can therefore actively filter the air that passes through it.
