Mammoth Freighters adds 777 freight conversion facility in UK

Mammoth Freighters on Monday announced a new collaboration with STS Aviation Services to increase production capacity for Boeing 777 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversions.

All work will be carried out at the STS facility in Manchester, UK, starting in mid-2024. The multi-year agreement covers the 777-200LR and 777-300ER aircraft.

Mammoth Freighters, an aerospace startup powered by Fortress Investment Group, is one of two companies involved in converting used 777s into freighters after they are retired from passenger service. Boeing sells factory 777 freighters, but until now there has been no conversion program for the large wide-body aircraft.

Based in Orlando, Florida, Mammoth’s main facility is at Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas. The former American Airlines maintenance center has 840,000 square feet of space, six wide-body hangars and overhead cranes for modification and maintenance.

Aerospace company last week the company “AviaAM Leasing” announced as one of the first customers and says it has 29 firm orders to date.

“Ensuring that we have the necessary modification capabilities around the world to meet the high demand for the Mammoth 777 freighter program is vital to our success,” David Steinmetz, Mammoth’s senior vice president of operations, said in a press release – release. “STS has the experience, knowledge, capabilities and, most importantly, the quality reputation we expect from an MRO. [maintenance, repair and overhaul] partner”.

The STS facility will also provide Mammoth with urgent aircraft maintenance, product support and spare parts throughout Europe. STS, an aircraft maintenance and parts supplier based in Melbourne, Florida, acquired the Manchester facility earlier this year as part of its expansion efforts. This is the company’s third facility in the UK

“This P2F program has brought stability to Manchester from day one and means we can go forward by investing in entry-level engineers and trainees, giving them opportunities to develop into core programs and real-world aircraft construction,” said STS managing director Ian Bartholomew.

Mammoth is developing its freighter prototype and plans to begin commercial production next year once the 777 conversion design is certified by the US government.

Meanwhile, Miami-based Aeronautical Engineers Inc. said Aviation Holdings III Investments has placed an order for the twelfth conversion of the Boeing B737-800 freighter. Reconstruction work is planned to begin in February.

Also Titan Aircraft Investments, a joint venture of Atlas Air Worldwide (NASDAQ: AAWW) a subsidiary of Titan Aviation Holdings Inc. and Bain Capital Credit announced the long-term dry lease of a converted Boeing 737-800 freighter to Dublin-based ASL Aviation Holdings.
